Difficult to become an atheist in India
Javed Akhtar had revealed in Barkha Dutt’s podcast that he is an atheist, but being from a Muslim family, his identity remained Muslim. He had said- I am a Muslim atheist. Doesn’t believe in religion, but it is difficult to become an atheist under social pressure. The condition of atheists is like that of gay people.
Muslims call me Amar, Hindus shout ‘Go to Pakistan’. Abuses are received from both sides. I celebrate all festivals like Eid-Holi-Diwali.
Secularism is almost dead in Pakistan
In a discussion on India-Pakistan relations, Javed Akhtar made this sharp attack on the social condition of Pakistan. He believed that secularism has remained nominal there and fundamentalism has become dominant. Some intellectuals in Pakistan called it over-generalization, but in India this statement remained limited to literary circles.
Giving an example, Javed said that seeing the condition of minorities in Pakistan, it is clear that secularism is in danger.

I will choose between hell and Pakistan.

He had said- If I have to choose between Pakistan and hell, I will choose hell. One side says you are a Kafir (atheist) and will go to hell. The other side says Jihadis, go to Pakistan. I am abused from both sides.
Partition of India was wrong, Pakistan emerged from India
In 2023, at the Faiz Festival in Lahore, Javed Akhtar clearly said that the partition of India was a historical mistake. He told that Pakistan was a part of India, which was divided into two countries in 1947. Akhtar stressed that the people of both the countries are fundamentally linked to the same cultural roots and partition created unnecessary enmity. This statement was applauded by the Pakistani audience, but a controversy broke out in the India-Pakistan media.
Azaan on loudspeaker should be stopped
In 2020, Javed Akhtar had tweeted that Azaan on loudspeaker was haram for almost 50 years in India, later it became halal, but now there is no limit to it. He stressed that Azaan is fine, but loudspeakers cause inconvenience to others, hence it should be stopped. Especially during Ramzan, he appealed that Muslims themselves should stop this. Many people including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi objected to this statement and a controversy broke out. Akhtar had described noise pollution as a social issue.

Religion has made man coward
At an Indian Express event in 2024, Javed Akhtar called religion a product of the ‘dark ages’, which conflicts with modern science. Javed Akhtar had said- Religion has not made man better, but more cowardly. Religion has made fear a weapon, which hinders human progress.

The biggest injustice is to call Urdu a Muslim language.
Javed Akhtar had clearly said in a program at India International Center in 2024 that calling Urdu a Muslim language is the biggest injustice. He had told that 200 years ago Hindi and Urdu were one language, British policies divided them. Languages are not religious, but regional. If Hindi is not for Hindus, then how did Urdu become for Muslims?
Javed Akhtar had given the example that Muslims of the Middle East or Uzbekistan do not speak Urdu, but it is prevalent in many areas of India. He described Urdu as the original language of India, which is the gift of culture and not of any one religion. Hindu writers like Premchand, Nirala enriched Urdu. This statement of Javed Akhtar was a sharp attack on language-religion discrimination.

Mob’s decision described as poison for democracy
Javed Akhtar had commented on the incidents of cow protection violence and mob lynching in 2019. He called the mob’s decision a poison for democracy. Without naming political parties, Javed Akhtar had said that taking law into one’s own hands will lead to anarchy.

The job of an artist is not to sycophant, it is to raise questions from the society.

Javed Akhtar had said – The basic duty of artists is not to sycophant the government, but to raise questions from the society. He cited the example of American actress Meryl Streep, who openly criticizes, while in India the fear of agency raids dominates.
Burqa-veil described as social pressure
At SOA Literary Festival 2025, Javed Akhtar had called burqa-veil as social pressure. He had said- “Why do girls cover their faces? What’s obscene about a face? This is not a personal choice, it is the result of brainwashing.” Javed Akhtar also linked the veil to the same pressure, which takes away the freedom of women. Even before this, many times Javed Akhtar has demanded a ban on the veil along with the burqa ban.
RSS was compared to Taliban
Javed Akhtar compared RSS to Taliban in a TV debate on NDTV in 2021. Javed Akhtar had said- “There is ideological similarity in the thinking of those who want a Hindu nation and the Taliban.” He described the fanatic thinking of RSS supporters as that of Taliban, which promotes religious fanaticism.

Question raised on double standards of gender violence

He had said- “Women were burnt alive, husbands and in-laws used to beat them, then where was the anger of the society? What a shameless society it is.”
Shocked by the murders of two women, he sarcastically asked why silence on male atrocities? Javed Akhtar told the old story of the daughters-in-law whose pressure cooker burst, which shows the pressure from the in-laws. Showing a mirror to the society, he exposed the double standards on gender violence.
It is forbidden in Islam yet Muslims drink
In December 2025, Javed Akhtar made shocking revelations on alcohol in the ‘Does God Exist’ debate with Mufti Shamail Nadvi. I myself used to drink alcohol and under the influence of alcohol, I used foul language and became another person.”
Taking a jibe at Jinnah, Javed Akhtar had said, “He used to drink alcohol and eat pigs, but many Muslims drink alcohol and are afraid of pigs.”
Criticized porn films with male-oriented mindset
In the inauguration of Anantrang Mental Health Cultural Festival in October 2025, Javed Akhtar had strongly criticized pornographic films having male ideology. He had said – ‘In this country, obscenity easily passes the censor, which humiliates women from a male perspective. Films that mirror society stop.”
Javed Akhtar, blaming the audience, especially the male mentality, had said that if the mental health of men improves, such films will not be made or run. Film is the window of society, closing it does not hide the truth.
