A woman officer of Jalandhar origin posted in a Canadian jail has faced serious allegations regarding her relationship with a Punjabi prisoner. According to investigation, he got his duty done in the same block where the prisoner was confined. She spent most of her time around his cell and kept in touch with him through an allegedly illegal mobile phone in addition to the official prison phone system. In return the prisoner kept lavishing expensive gifts on him. According to investigation documents, he also bore the expenses of the female officer’s cosmetic surgery and foreign trips. The whole matter came to light when the investigation into the conspiracy of a deadly attack on the house of a senior jail officer began. The investigating agencies allege that the woman officer of Jalandhar origin had sent the photo of the number plate of that officer’s car to the prisoner. After this, allegedly on the basis of the same information, the entire conspiracy was hatched by identifying the officer. This case later became an important part of the Canadian Police’s Project South investigation. On July 3, with the permission of the Ontario Superior Court, parts of the 563-page ITO (Information to Obtain) were made public, revealing the entire incident. The matter is currently pending in the court. The female officer is on paid leave, while the prisoner is still in jail. Investigative agencies have also linked his name to the alleged drug network of America’s wanted drug smuggler Royan Wedding. Nishwant of Dosanjh village, a prisoner went to Canada as a driver. According to Canadian Police, the family of Nishwant Kaur Dosanjh is said to be related to Dosanjh Kalan village of Jalandhar district of Punjab. She lives in Abbotsford, British Columbia and was a corporal at the Toronto South Detention Centre. Gurpreet Singh, 32, came to Canada as a truck driver from Punjab. Later the investigating agencies linked his name to the alleged drug smuggling network of America’s wanted drug smuggler Ryan Wedding. He has been lodged in a Toronto jail since October 2024 and is facing extradition proceedings to the US. There was already love between the two, the relationship got activated again after seeing each other in jail. According to ITO, there was a personal relationship between the two for a long time even before Gurpreet reached Toronto South Detention Center in October 2024. When Nishwant came to know about Gurpreet after reaching jail, their relationship became active again. Investigating agencies allege that Nishwant got his duty done in the same tower and block where Gurpreet was confined. There were continuous personal meetings between the two from October 2024 to 2025. More time outside the cell, this is where the suspicion increased. According to the police, Nishwant often spent more time than necessary around Gurpreet’s cell. Jail supervisors also noticed that after meeting Gurpreet, she also met his former cellmate. Investigators say that after this unusual activity, surveillance was increased on both of them. Apart from the jail phone, contact was also made through alleged illegal mobile phone. According to ITO, apart from the official phone system of the jail, both were also in constant contact through the alleged illegal mobile phone possessed by Gurpreet. During the investigation, many conversations of Gurpreet were intercepted and monitored. Investigation documents claimed that Nishwant had told a colleague that Gurpreet had given him expensive gifts, paid for cosmetic surgeries and even paid for foreign trips. Investigating officer Detective Constable Antonio D’Onofrio wrote that Gurpreet had such an influence on Nishwant that it was highly unusual for a prison officer and prisoner relationship. According to York Regional Police, a conspiracy was hatched to murder a senior correctional officer in June 2025. The attacker with his face covered also tried to attack the officer’s house. The allegation in the ITO is that Gurpreet made the entire plan through associates present outside the jail, while Nishwant allegedly played the role of ‘Internal Facilitator’. Police claim that they took the photo of the number plate of the senior officer’s car and sent it to Gurpreet. Later, on the basis of this information, the vehicle records were extracted and the officer’s house was identified. Investigating agencies say that after this incident the scope of investigation of Project South increased. Took revenge for Nishwant’s resentment. It was not made clear in the court documents made public in this case what enmity Gurpreet Singh had with the senior jail officer. However, the police claim that Nishwant Dosanjh was angry with that officer and after that the alleged conspiracy was hatched. Many more names in the investigation: Apart from Nishwant and Gurpreet, names of many police officers and civilians are also mentioned in the 563-page ITO that are under investigation. The agencies are also investigating the alleged contacts and cooperation between them. The investigation report also said that cases of contraband and corruption have already come to light in the Toronto South Detention Centre.
