Jaipal Malviya of Madhya Pradesh has won silver in the Shooting World Championship. He achieved this feat in the men’s 10 meter air pistol event of the ongoing ISSF World Championship in Doha, the capital of Qatar on Thursday.

Jaipal stood second in the final by scoring 242.2 points. China’s Hu Kai won gold with 243.9 points. The difference between the two was only 1.7 points. Czech Republic’s Jindrich Dubovy finished third with 220.9 points.

With this performance of Jaipal, India also got the first shooting quota for Los Angeles Olympics 2028. However, this does not mean that only Jaipal will represent India in the Olympics.

The quota is in the name of the country, not in the name of the player. That means India has got a place for the Olympics in this event. Which player will take this place will be decided on the basis of the selection process of the Indian Shooting Federation and the scheduled trials.

How did India get its first Olympic shooting quota with silver?

The importance of this medal is not limited to just the medal tally. Jaipal has got India a quota in 10 meter air pistol for Los Angeles Olympics 2028.

According to ISSF rules, the top 3 countries got one quota each in the 10 meter air pistol men’s final of the Doha World Championship. Hu Kai achieved this position for China, Jaypal for India and Dubovy achieved this position for Czech Republic.

During this World Championship in Doha, a total of 36 quotas are to be given in 12 individual Olympic events. There are three quotas available in each event.

Still more stages left to reach Los Angeles

The entire qualification journey of shooting is still pending. Apart from Doha, countries will also get opportunities to achieve quota in the World Championship, World Cup and continental competitions to be held in 2027. Some places will also be given through Olympic ranking.

There will be 15 medal events in the shooting program at Los Angeles 2028. These include six individual events each for men and women and three mixed team events. A total of 340 players will get a chance to participate in the shooting.

Finished third in qualification, handled the situation under pressure in the final

To reach the medal round, Jaipal first had to go through the qualification match. In this he scored a total of 585 points in six series and secured third place. On the basis of this performance, he got a place in the final of eight players.

In 10 meter air pistol, players aim at an electronic target from a distance of 10 metres. Points are awarded on the basis of every shot. The closer the target is to the center, the higher the score.

He stood seventh in the qualification round of this competition. Despite this, he stood first in the final by scoring 245.6 points.
