He has been expelled from the Army, Communist Party and Army on charges of corruption. This is considered to be the biggest action under President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign started in 2023.

He Weidong was the vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), the second-highest post in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). This commission holds the supreme command of the army under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. He was not seen in public since March 2025.

Admiral Miao was a Navy Admiral and former top political officer of the Army. He was removed from CMC in June and was under investigation since November 2023.

He Weidong is considered a close aide of Xi Jinping. The two worked together in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in the 1990s. Hay was directly elevated to the post of CMC vice-chairman in 2022, a position usually held after service in the High Commission.

Chinese analysts say the action is part of President Xi Jinping’s mission to reduce corruption in the military and party.

Wen-Ti Sung, an expert at the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub, said, ‘Xi Jinping is definitely cleaning up the party. After removing He and Miao, he will now be able to make new appointments in the Central Military Commission, which has been half vacant since March.

This announcement has come a few days before the fourth meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, where more decisions related to this will be taken.

China had removed the Chief of Navy and Deputy Chief of National Nuclear

Earlier, China had removed two senior army officers under the anti-corruption program. These included Navy Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Li Hanjun and China National Nuclear Corporation’s Deputy Chief Engineer Liu Shipeng.

Action was taken against these officers due to corruption. China feared that the Chinese army was becoming weak due to corruption. Therefore, anti-corruption drive is going on in the army from 2023. Under this, many officers have been removed so far.

Defense Minister was also accused of corruption

Since becoming President, Xi Jinping has been engaged in preventing corruption in the army. In the year 2024, China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun was also named in the anti-corruption drive, after which an inquiry was instituted against him. Earlier, two former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe were removed from the post.

Xi’s goal is to ensure loyalty to the Communist Party in the military and make it a global superpower. Experts also believe that this action is part of eliminating corruption as well as further strengthening Xi Jinping’s power.

Dong Jun became Defense Minister in December 2023. He was the third Defense Minister of China against whom such an investigation was initiated.

China is continuously modernizing its army

China is continuously modernizing its army. China has increased its annual defense budget this year by 7.2%. This year it increased to $249 billion (1.78 trillion yuan). This is almost 3 times more than India’s military budget of $79 billion.

Experts estimate that China’s actual defense expenditure is 40-50% more than its stated expenditure. China allocates money under different sectors to make its military expenditure look less.

China spends the most on military after America. America’s defense budget is around $950 billion. Which is more than 4 times the budget of China.
