China has taken action against a foreign ship for using Elon Musk’s company Starlink in its maritime zone. According to the report of South China Morning Post, China has considered this satellite internet service as a threat to its national security.
Starlink is completely banned in China and the company does not even have a license to provide service there. Chinese officials say that whenever a ship comes to their territory, it must immediately stop using Starlink terminals.
Why does China consider Starlink a threat?
There are very strict laws in China regarding telecom and internet. Foreign companies are not allowed to provide basic telecom services there, and this also includes satellite internet.
- Control over data: China’s rule is that any satellite communication within the country must pass through a ‘domestic gateway’ (domestic server).
- Permission required: To use radio frequencies or devices in China, official approval is required from the government. Starlink does not have this approval.

China is afraid of military connection
Starlink is a massive network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. According to AP report, Chinese researchers believe that Starlink is ‘high risk’ for China’s strategic interests. Starlink’s communications data passes through foreign gateways rather than domestic infrastructure, which China does not control.
China’s ‘National University of Defense Technology’ had published a paper in 2023. It was said that America is using Starlink technology to increase its military power. Therefore, other countries consider it a security threat in the nuclear, space and cyber domains.
Preparation to break Musk’s monopoly
Elon Musk’s company SpaceX currently has a monopoly in the world of satellite internet. Starlink is working in more than 140 countries of the world. In June this year, it got the license to work in India also (source
SpaceX’s ‘Falcon 9’ is the only rocket in the world that is reusable (ie can be used again and again) and launches satellites regularly.
China now wants to break this monopoly. China’s private rocket company ‘Landspace’ recently tested a reusable rocket with its new ‘Zhuque-3’ model.
Although this launch failed, but according to Reuters report, many government and private companies of China are now racing to make and test their own reusable rockets.
