US President Donald Trump has distanced himself from this time’s G20 summit citing atrocities against white farmers in South Africa. At the same time, Putin is not afraid of the ICC arrest warrant issued due to the Ukraine war.
According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping was also unable to attend the program at the last moment due to deteriorating health. Due to the absence of three big world leaders, India’s role in this summit has increased even more.
PM Modi will deliver speeches in all three sessions of the summit. Here he will present his suggestions on issues like inclusive economic development, dealing with climate crisis and Artificial Intelligence.
In a statement issued before his visit, PM Modi said that this summit is special because for the first time a G20 summit is being held in the African continent. PM Modi said that the African Union was made a member of the G20 during India’s G20 presidency in 2023. India had a big role in this.
Why is G20 summit special for India?
This year’s G20 summit being held in South Africa is special for India because during its presidency in 2023, India had made the African Union a member of the G20.
Now for the first time the summit is being held in Africa. Due to this, respect for India has increased in all African countries. When PM Modi reached Africa on Friday, local artists welcomed him by lying on the ground in his honour.
In the absence of Trump, Putin and Jinping, India has become the most prominent face of the summit. PM Modi will present India’s side on issues like economic development, climate resilience and artificial intelligence in all three important sessions of the summit.
This summit will prove to be a big platform to strongly present India’s Global South leadership and the voice of developing countries.

Modi will attend India-Brazil-South Africa meeting
Apart from G20, PM Modi will also attend the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) meeting. Will also meet leaders of many countries separately.
Modi has officially reached South Africa for the fourth time. Earlier, he had come here for a bilateral visit in 2016 and then for two BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023.
Before leaving, Modi issued a statement saying – This summit is an opportunity to discuss global issues. He said that in this summit he will again put forward India’s vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ i.e. ‘One Family and One Future’.
G20 summit helpful for South Africa
For the first time in its 20-year history, the G20 Summit is being held in South Africa. This country is struggling with problems like climate change, debt crisis and slow development.
Because of the summit, African countries are able to present these challenges to the world. Through the summit, emphasis is being laid on providing debt relief to these countries, promoting development, reducing lack of education and hunger.
The summit is taking place just five years before the United Nations meets its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. That means this is one of those big opportunities when the world can come together to help Africa.
The G20 summit of 2024 was held in Brazil. During this period, PM Modi met top leaders of many countries.
Trump will not attend G20 summit, will send ambassador
In early November, Trump had said that he would not attend the G20 summit. Trump had posted on social media and alleged that white farmers are being tortured in South Africa.
However, now he has changed his stance of sending the American representative a day before the G20 summit. South African President Ramaphosa said on Thursday he had received a notice from the US saying it had changed its mind about attending the summit.
White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt said Friday that the administration planned to send its acting ambassador to South Africa, Mark D. Dillard, but he would attend only the final session of the summit.
Trump had earlier said that no American official will go to South Africa, he is boycotting this summit. In response to this, South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, had said that G20 has now become such a big platform that its work does not stop due to the absence of one country.
G7 countries created G20
The G20 is seen as an extension of the G7, a group of the world’s most powerful countries. The G7 consists of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, the US and Canada.
In 1997-98, many countries in Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Korea etc.) were facing economic crisis. At that time only G7 (7 rich countries) used to take decisions, but the crisis was in Asia.
G7 realized that now only 7 countries can run the world together, but developing countries like India, China, Brazil will also have to be included. These countries created the G20 in 1999.
Initially it was a forum of only finance ministers and central bank governors. Then in 2008, it was decided that not only the Finance Minister, but also the President and Prime Minister of the countries would participate in it.
The first Leaders’ Summit was held in Washington in November 2008. After this this summit is held every year.
G20 presidency changes every year
The presidency of G20 changes every year. G20 members are divided into 5 regional groups. Every year a group takes its turn, and a country from within that group becomes president (in alphabetical order or by mutual consent).
The chair country sets the agenda for the entire year, organizes all the meetings and finally hosts the Leaders’ Summit. The presidency begins on 1 December and ends on 30 November.
Before South Africa, Brazil had chaired the G20 Summit in the year 2024. At the same time, after South Africa, the hosting of 2026 will go to America.
