A former Chinese soldier was trapped in the fortified base of cyber scammers in Myanmar for a month. Yang said that China and Thailand, along with Myanmar, had also started joint action against the bases of these scammers. Yang said the news gave him the illusion that the Thailand-Myanmar border area was safe.
However, they were surprised to see that scammers’ dens were everywhere in the three pagodas. Yang said that the people in his group were beaten as a disciplinary measure as soon as they entered the compound. Yang, a former soldier who joined the army in 2002 and received infantry training, said he was tortured at the site.
According to Yang, on the very first evening at the scammer base, Yang did something that impressed the leader there. In fact, he beat the local guide to death. Then he called the Chinese police. He went to the back part of the hostel built in the secret base, where guards patrolled occasionally. Then he saw some sand bags and wooden planks lying under the six meter high wall of that scamming den.
Being a trained soldier, Yang was able to climb the wall and grab the edge of the wall with his fingers. Then he jumped over the wall and went to the other side. Yang said he was lucky because there was no electricity running through the wire on the wall. There was no other base next to the wall.
He fled the scene wearing only a tank top, shorts and Crocs. He looked at the map app and found that he was only 3 kilometers away from the border. Still, I could not run in that direction, Yang said. There were guards there and I would be sent back to the base.

Yang told that he had reached the border at around 1 am the next day. He told that an armed man was guarding the border. So he remained hidden till 3 in the morning, but the person did not go. So he picked up a strong straw rope lying nearby, approached the man from behind and overpowered him.
He reached Thailand early the next morning. During the escape, Yang talked to his former soldier and several police officers on a chat app and checked his phone once every hour.
Even while living in Thailand, he remained alert. He used to hide during the day and run at night to save his life. He felt relieved only after reaching the Chinese Embassy in Thailand. He told that by the time he reached the embassy, only 17 percent of his phone’s battery was left.
After waiting half a month for the passport to be reissued, he returned to China. Yang has also shared this story on social media. Talking about his experience, Yang said that he still has nightmares about running in the mountains and ending up drenched in sweat.
