7 trainee doctors are on hunger strike since October 6 in protest against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. On the night of October 10, the condition of a trainee doctor, Dr. Aniket Mahato, became critical, after which he was admitted to the ICU of the hospital after RG.

On Friday, the doctor of RG Kar Hospital said that Mahato’s condition remains critical, but he is stable now. His pulse rate and other health parameters are not falling anymore, but they are not improving either. A team of 5 doctors is keeping an eye on him.

On the other hand, the condition of the remaining 6 doctors is also worsening, but they have not been admitted to the hospital yet. A doctor said that despite his health deteriorating, he has decided to continue the strike. An ambulance is deployed near the strike site.

Apart from these 7, 2 more doctors are sitting on hunger strike in North Bengal Medical College. One of them said on Friday night – The local police is trying to end our strike by putting pressure on our patients, but I will not step down.

A trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital on the night of 8 August. On August 9, the victim’s body was found in the medical college. From the next day, junior doctors protested for 42 days.

The state government did not accept the demands of the doctors. Due to which the doctors started a hunger strike from the evening of 5th October. 9 doctors are involved in this, today is the seventh day of the hunger strike.

11 October

  • Chief Secretary’s Report: Chief Secretary Manoj Pant sent the status report of the ongoing health initiative in West Bengal. He told in the mail written to the doctors – To increase the security of doctors, 7,051 CCTV cameras, 893 new duty rooms and 778 washrooms are being made in medical colleges. Apart from this, alarm system and biometric access control system are also being installed in all the hospitals.
  • IMA’s letter to CM: Indian Medical Association has also written a letter to CM Mamata Banerjee. In which it has been demanded that the state government should take immediate action on the demands of the doctors, peaceful environment and security is not a luxury. We appeal, resolve this issue. The doctors have been fasting unto death for almost a week. The Bengal government should pay immediate attention to this. You are able to accept all the demands of the doctors.

10 October

  • 1 Doctor admitted to hospital: Due to continuous hunger strike, the health of a doctor, Aniket Mahato, deteriorated further. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance late at night in an unconscious state. A team of 5 doctors monitored him.
  • Mamta sent 4 doctors: To get information about the health of the doctors sitting on hunger strike, Mamata government sent 4 expert doctors to the place of hunger strike. He suggested doctors to admit him to hospital before his health deteriorated.

9 October

  • Meeting of Chief Secretary and doctors sitting on strike: A team of doctors held a meeting with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant for about 2 hours on October 9. About 20 representatives of medical colleges from across the state attended the meeting held at the health department headquarters in Salt Lake. The doctors alleged that they did not get anything except assurances. Junior doctor said- The state government has said to think about the demands after Durga Puja.
  • Resignation of more than 100 doctors: 106 doctors and faculty of RG Kar Hospital resigned. 19 doctors from Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital, 42 from Siliguri’s North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, 35 from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital and around 70 doctors from Kolkata Medical College and Hospital have resigned.

Doctors had earlier put forward 5 demands, out of which the government fulfilled 3… then hunger strike. Junior doctors went on strike for 42 days from August 10 to September 21 against the rape-murder incident. The doctors had earlier placed 5 demands before the government. Of these, the government accepted 3 demands. CM Mamata had assured to consider two other demands and conditions.

After this the doctors ended the strike. He had returned to work in hospitals. On 27 September, a case of beating of 3 doctors and 3 nurses came to light in Sagor Dutta Hospital, due to which the doctors got angry and started the strike again on 1 October.

On 4 October, the junior doctors called off the strike, but continued the strike. He said that we are returning to work because a large number of patients are facing problems in government hospitals. However, he had given an ultimatum of 24 hours to the state government. After this he started a fast.

Junior doctor in RG Kar found gloves with blood stains in the box. On Thursday, a junior doctor at RG Kar said that while treating a patient, he found surgical gloves with blood stains in a sealed box. There is a risk of spreading infection by using such gloves.

The junior doctor said he was treating an infected patient in the trauma care center of the hospital when he found the gloves. He said that if the spots were of mud or dirt, they could have been wiped off. But these appear to be blood stains.

The junior doctor also claimed that this is not an issue limited to RG Kar Hospital, but such a problem has come to light in many other medical colleges also. Earlier on September 28, fungus was found in saline bottles.

The Central Medical Supply Department of the State Health Department has said that it will investigate the matter.
