Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has appealed to the doctors who are fasting in protest against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College to end the fast. He said that most of the demands of the doctors have been fulfilled, but rejected the demand for removal of the Health Secretary.

Mamta said- ‘Everyone has the right to protest, but health services should not be affected by this. It is not possible to fire everyone in a department at once. We have already removed DHS and DME, so rise above politics and get back to work.

Junior doctors have been on hunger strike for the last 15 days demanding justice for trainee doctors and improvement in medical facilities. So far, six doctors have been admitted to hospital due to ill health, while eight others are on an indefinite fast. Doctors demand that the state government take concrete steps to solve the problem by October 21.

Mamta Banerjee will meet doctors on Monday Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Saturday evening invited the doctors to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a 45-minute meeting at the State Secretariat on Monday. Mamta said- Is it right that the doctor should decide who should be removed? Mamata Banerjee also requested the doctors to end their fast and meet her on Monday. She said, ‘I have removed the Commissioner of Police (CP), Director of Medical Education (DME), and Director of Health Services (DHS), but I cannot remove the entire department.’

He asked, ‘Is it logical that you decide which officer should be removed? There is a need to make a policy for some demands and the government will fully cooperate in this, but we do not accept that doctors should order the government as to what to do.

Mamta told the doctors- forget my post, consider me as sister. Mamta asked the doctors to understand their responsibilities and pay attention to the fact that the health services of the state are being affected by this strike. He said, ‘People depend on your treatment. Where will the poor people go? They get free treatment in government hospitals. Please forget my position and consider me as your sister. Your demands are legitimate, but you should serve the public.

Doctors across the state will go on strike on October 22 The protesting doctors said that if their demands are not met, all medical professionals across the state will go on strike on October 22. Along with this, doctors have also planned to organize a big rally on Sunday, October 20.
