After the recent incident of stampede and chaos in the famous Chorbagan Sarvajaneen Durga Puja pandal of North Kolkata, now a big update has come out. Taking moral responsibility for this tragic accident, General Secretary of Chorbagan Sarvajaneen Durgotsav Committee Jayant Banerjee and all the officials of the executive have resigned from their posts. Since the incident, questions were continuously being raised on the puja committee and local management.
According to the official resignation letter issued by the committee, General Secretary Jayant Banerjee has written in a letter signed by him that he is completely relieving himself of all responsibilities and posts in connection with this year’s Durga Puja.
It has also been mentioned in the letter that not only the General Secretary, but all other officials working as members and executive under this committee are also relieved from their posts and responsibilities. The committee has expressed hope that in the coming days the new committee will take over the entire arrangement and responsibility of the puja, for which it has also sent its best wishes. Signatures of other officials are also present in the letter.
Why was this step taken?
It is worth noting that 17 people died in a stampede at the exit gate of Chorbagan Sarvajaneen Durga Puja Pandal amidst huge crowd and rain, while about 40 were injured, they had to be immediately admitted to Calcutta Medical College Hospital.
Eyewitnesses had made serious allegations regarding the narrow paths of the pandal and lack of lighting. After this unpleasant incident, sharp reactions were coming to the fore regarding security arrangements at the administration and local level, due to which the moral pressure on the committee had increased significantly.
