Kerala University Vice Chancellor Mohanan Kannummal on Saturday said those who oppose Vande Mataram do not know who their mother is. The country is called Mother India and Vande Mataram is related to this thinking.
Kannummal made this statement at the RSS youth conference in Manivila, Thiruvananthapuram. Student organizations SFI and KSU have accused Kannummal of pushing the agenda of RSS in the university.

Vice Chancellors accused of promoting RSS agenda
This statement of Kannummal has come at a time when there is a political controversy going on in Kerala regarding the closeness of University Vice Chancellors to RSS.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have raised questions on the appointment of Kannummal to the post of Vice Chancellor by the Governor of Kerala. Both the alliances have accused the state of trying to saffronize its education system.
New law made on July 29, 3 years imprisonment for insulting Vande Mataram
This controversy regarding Vande Mataram has taken place at a time when the Parliament has recently passed a new law giving it legal protection. Under this, Vande Mataram has got equal legal protection as ‘Jana Gana Mana’. There is a provision of up to 3 years in jail, fine or both for intentionally insulting it or obstructing its singing.

Centre’s order – First Vande Mataram, then Jana Gana Mana
On July 9, the Home Ministry had issued new instructions to all states, union territories and central ministries regarding the singing and playing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ and the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. In this, both were asked to use correct words, pronunciation and follow the prescribed protocol.
According to the instructions, if both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana are sung or played in a program, then Vande Mataram will be played first and then the national anthem. If any state or union territory also has its own state song, then first the state song will be then Vande Mataram and finally Jana Gana Mana.

The order came for the first time on 28 January
Earlier on January 28 also, the government had given the same order to all the states. According to this, the national anthem will be played in all schools at the beginning of the day.
Every person will have to stand at the time of Vande Mataram. All 6 stanzas of the national anthem will be sung. Their total duration is 3.10 minutes. First two Antaras were sung.
Cinema halls have been kept away from the new rules. This means that it will not be mandatory to play Vande Mataram and stand before the movie starts in theatres.
If the national anthem is played as part of a newsreel or documentary film, the audience will not be required to stand during it.
