The political atmosphere in Jharkhand has reached a boiling point as students protesting against recruitment exam “anomalies” drastically escalated their agitation. Protesters accused the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress coalition of playing politics with their careers, demanding that Chief Minister Hemant Soren step down immediately if their grievances remain unaddressed, as per PTI inputs.
The student agitationspearheaded by the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch, has been ongoing for over three weeks in Ranchi, focusing on alleged irregularities in recruitment tests conducted by the state public service and staff selection commissions.
Effigy-Burning Planned Across 24 Districts
As part of the intensified campaign, student leaders announced plans to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi across all 24 district headquarters in Jharkhand on 16 August.
The decision to target the Congress leadership stems from growing frustration over what students term political hypocrisy. Protesters demanded that Congress immediately withdraw its support from the JMM-led coalition government if the Chief Minister fails to act on their demands. Student representatives highlighted that despite verbal assurances from Congress leaders supporting their cause, no concrete political pressure has been applied to resolve the deadlock.
Key Demands and Upcoming Siege of CM’s Residence
The core demands of the protesting job aspirants centre on ensuring structural integrity and transparency in the state’s examination process. The primary demands include:
- Immediate cancellation of the JSSC CGL examination and the 11th to 13th JPSC civil services examinations.
- A comprehensive probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or an independent judicial panel consisting of retired High Court judges from outside the state.
- Complete overhauling of recruitment agencies to restore public confidence.

The state administration has maintained that paper leaks and exam issues represent a broader nationwide challenge, asserting that reforms are underway. State authorities recently initiated cabinet-level discussions and reported accepting 98 per cent of student demands, alongside high-profile administrative resignations and arrests linked to exam irregularities.
However, student bodies rejected these steps as superficial, insisting that nothing short of complete exam cancellations, an independent CBI inquiry, and political accountability will end their demonstration.
