Kunal Khemu, who started as a child artiste, has made a name for himself in acting, writing and direction. Now he is hosting Prime Video’s first daily reality show ‘Alliance’. While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, he talked about the show’s format, hosting experience, family and career related questions. Question: Hosting a reality show for the first time. What was it that compelled you to agree to it? A: I liked that it wasn’t just me making the first move. Prime Video is also bringing daily reality shows for the first time. This format is being made for the first time in India. Felt that we would all learn together. There are realities and challenges in this. Relationships are made, broken and the game changes every day. Here decisions are not taken from outside, the contestants themselves decide. Question: How different is it from Bigg Boss and other reality shows? Answer: The biggest difference is its format. People come here not alone but in pairs. Four alliances are formed and the game revolves around them. Here the focus is more on strategy and relationships than on kitchen or everyday battles. Question: Big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar and Shilpa Shetty have already hosted. Felt the pressure of comparison? Answer: I never took the pressure of comparison. If someone has done better then why should I copy it? The producers said they wanted my different energy. I thought I would start by taking the name of God. I first want to know for myself whether I enjoy it or not. If it doesn’t feel natural then I’ll go back to my old job. Question: In real life, are you a lonely person or do you believe in forming alliances? Answer: I have made the most important companion in life. Every work requires a different partner. Runners are needed for running, actors are needed for films and good writers are needed for writing. I love working with passionate people. Question: If friendship, enmity and betrayal are seen in the show, then what would you like the most? Answer: All types of emotions are necessary in reality shows. It’s not fun just laughing or fighting. I find people more interesting. Sometimes even people who remain silent leave an impact. On the very first day, such incidents happened that no one had imagined. Real reality is different from the script. Question: If you want to invite someone from the film industry as a contestant in this show, then who will you invite? Answer: It is difficult to say right now. Let me watch the entire season first, then I will understand what kind of people will fit in. Question: If Soha, Saif and Kareena come to this show, with whom will they form an alliance and whom will they betray? Answer: This is not going to happen, so there is no point in thinking right now. I don’t know how the game will progress. We will see when the opportunity comes. Question: Seeing any contestant, did you feel that he is like a character from Golmaal? Answer: Not yet. Armaan’s energy felt different. He is a lovely and unique person. The true colors will emerge as the game progresses. Q: Acting, directing, writing, music and now hosting. What did you find most difficult? Answer: Hosting seems to be the most challenging thing at the moment because it is a new experience for me. Had experience of acting and directing, but here I have to learn something new every moment. Question: Will strategy or emotions work more in this show? Answer: Strategy helps for a short while, but in the long run the real nature comes to the fore. Decisions will not be taken by outsiders but by people at home. That’s why real identity matters. Question: Do you enjoy more in front of the camera or behind the camera? Answer: Acting is my first love and always will be. Direction gave me a different kind of freedom. As a director, you remain connected to the entire team. Emotions come out openly. I liked that experience. Question: After Madgaon Express, what is the work on now? Answer: My film ‘Vibe’ written and directed will be released on September 18. The script of ‘Madgaon Express 2’ is ready and work on it is going on. Question: Still waiting for ‘Go Goa Gone 2’. What is the update on that? Answer: If the decision was in my hands, the second part would have been made long ago. But I don’t have the rights. Decisions will be taken only by those who have rights. Question: What would you like to say to the audience? Answer: Watch ‘Alliance’ every day at 12 midnight on Prime Video. This is a new format and hopefully the audience will like it.
