Karisma Kapoor is now seen in her new avatar on OTT. She spoke openly about her character in Zee 5’s web series ‘Brown’, the difficult shooting in Kolkata etc… How did she become a part of this project? Initially I had flatly refused for this project. I liked the story and characters but I was not comfortable shooting in Kolkata for 50-60 days. During that time the team of Zee Studios kept meeting me again and again. Even when I was shooting in Mehboob Studio, he arrived. Finally I took out 20 minutes and talked to director Abhinay Dev and the team. As soon as I heard about Rita Brown’s character, my perspective changed and I immediately said yes. What kind of preparation did you have to do to play a character like Rita Brown? Rita is completely different from me. He is an alcoholic, a chain smoker and is dependent on medicines. Our aim was to show a woman who is completely broken from inside. We didn’t even use makeup. Even his lips are shown to be damaged due to continuous cigarette smoking. This has been the most challenging and learning role of my career. How different is this uniformed role from other police characters? This is not a typical fit and action-packed police officer. In the beginning, Rita is so unfit that she cannot even run properly. We’re shown how mentally and physically broken she is. As the story progresses and the murder mystery unfolds, his personality also changes. Her regaining control of herself and becoming strong is the soul of this story. How was the experience of shooting in Kolkata? To be honest, we wanted to capture the winters of Kolkata, the Christmas atmosphere and the beauty of the city, but due to Covid, the entire schedule changed and when we reached there, it was extremely hot. The temperature was between 48 to 50 degrees Celsius. Shooting on real locations was not easy in that season. We had to shoot long chase sequences, investigation scenes and stay outside for hours. Was this your first experience of seeing Kolkata up close? I have been to Kolkata many times before for events and promotions, but the way we lived the city and shot at different locations during this project was a completely new and memorable experience. How have your priorities changed today? I think every artist’s thinking and priorities also change with time. Our cinema was different in the 90s, stardom, songs, big sets and commercial appeal had their own importance. I lived that period to the fullest and got a lot of love from the audience, but today’s time is about content and characters, where artists get a chance to explore themselves in a new way. Today I consider myself lucky that I am getting such roles.
