Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc has become the number-1 bowler in the ICC Test bowling rankings for the first time, leaving behind Jasprit Bumrah. Starc jumped two places after taking 10 wickets in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay. With this, Bumrah has reached second place and New Zealand’s Matt Henry has reached third place.
Starc took 6 wickets in the first innings and 4 wickets in the second innings in the match against Bangladesh. Thanks to his brilliant performance, Australia defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs.
Bumrah remained number-1 for 697 days
Bumrah became number-1 in the Test bowling rankings for the first time on 7 February 2024. He achieved this position after taking 9 wickets in the Visakhapatnam Test against England. He also became the first Indian fast bowler to become number-1 in the Test rankings.
According to ICC, this is the longest number-1 tenure of an Indian bowler in the Test rankings. This is the 14th longest number-1 tenure in Test history.
However, Bumrah’s journey to becoming number-1 did not continue in one go. After February in 2024, he again reached the top in October. He regained the number-1 position after taking 8 wickets against Australia in the Perth Test in November 2024.
Even in 2025, Bumrah remained on top in the rankings. He achieved 907 rating points after taking 9 wickets in the Melbourne Test in January 2025. At that time this was the highest rating score by an Indian bowler in the ICC Test rankings.
Bumrah was the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2024.
Became joint number-1 with Henry in June
In June 2026, Matt Henry of New Zealand also jointly achieved the number-1 position with Bumrah. Henry made a big jump in the rankings by taking 11 wickets. However, after this Bumrah again came alone at number-1.
Starc on top for the first time in 15 years of career
36-year-old Starc has achieved the number-1 position in the Test bowling rankings for the first time in his 15-year-long international career.
Starc’s best position in the Test rankings before this was number-2. After consistently good performance against England in the Ashes series at the end of last year, he reached the top-3. After this, 10 wickets against Bangladesh took him straight to number-1.

Robinson 15 and Tongue 16 places up
England’s Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue have benefited from their brilliant performances in the Headingley Test against Pakistan. Both the bowlers together took 16 wickets in the match.
Robinson has jumped 15 places to number 11. Meanwhile, Tong has moved up 16 places to reach number 17.
Pant is joint seventh in the top-10
There has been no change in the top-4 in the ranking of Test batsmen. Harry Brook of England remains at number-1 and Joe Root remains at number two. Australia’s Steve Smith is at third and Travis Head is at fourth.
India’s Rishabh Pant has benefited the most in the top-10. After scoring a quick half-century in the second innings of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, Pant has moved up six places to joint seventh position. He is tied at seventh place with Marnus Labuschagne of Australia.
Pant had scored a fifty in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka.
Outside the top-10, Australia’s Cameron Green has moved up nine places to 21st, Sri Lankan captain Dhananjay de Silva has moved up two places to joint 22nd and Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafiq has moved up seven places to joint 27th. India’s KL Rahul has jumped five places to 30th position.
Jadeja remains at number-1 among all-rounders
India’s Ravindra Jadeja remains at number-1 in the rankings of Test all-rounders. Australia’s Pat Cummins has moved up one place to seventh position. Cameron Green is joint 17th and Ollie Robinson is joint 23rd.
