Ajinkya Rahane had led Mumbai to the last Ranji Trophy title under his captaincy.

For the Irani Cup, Mumbai has handed over the captaincy to experienced Ajinkya Rahane. Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur will also be included in the team. Shreyas had participated in the Duleep Trophy, while Shardul is making a comeback after injury. While Rahane was recently playing county cricket in England.

In the Irani Cup, 2023 Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai will face Rest of India. The match will be played from 1 to 5 October at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Shardul will return after surgery

India’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur underwent surgery for ankle injury in June this year. After the surgery, he stayed away from cricket for 3 months. Then in September itself, he participated in Karnataka’s tournament. Mumbai Cricket Association said that he will be available for the Irani Cup. The full squad for the Irani Cup can be announced by Tuesday.

Shardul Thakur played the final of the World Test Championship 2023 for India.

Mumbai won the title under the captaincy of Rahane

Till 2015-16, Mumbai had won 41 Ranji Trophy titles. The team could not win the trophy in the next 6 tournaments. The team reached the finals in 2016 and 2021, but lost to Saurashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Last year again Ajinkya Rahane was out of Team India. After which Mumbai made him the captain of their Ranji team. The team performed brilliantly and won the Ranji Trophy title for the 42nd time by defeating Vidarbha in the final. The team’s title win came after 6 years.

Shreyas is waiting for his international comeback

After playing the ODI World Cup for India in 2023, Shreyas Iyer was also selected in the team for the England series. But he was dropped after a poor performance in the initial matches. Now he did not get a chance even in the Test series against Bangladesh. However, he captained Team-D in the Duleep Trophy.

Shreyas will now look for a way to make a comeback in the Indian team on the basis of good performance in Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy. After Bangladesh, Team India also has to play a 3 Test series against New Zealand.

Shreyas Iyer played his last Test for India in February this year.

Rest of India is yet to be announced

Mumbai has announced the captain and two important players of its team. However, the Rest of India team has not been announced yet. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) can also include the rest of the top players participating in the Duleep Trophy in the Rest of India.

New NCA to be inaugurated on 28th

The BCCI has informed that the new National Cricket Academy (NCA) built in Bengaluru will be inaugurated on September 28. The new NCA will have 3 world class grounds, 45 practice pitches, indoor cricket pitches, Olympic size swimming pool, training and recovery center along with sports science facilities.
