During landing at Chennai International Airport on Sunday morning, a passenger opened the emergency gate and jumped down from a moving Air Arabia flight. This flight had reached Chennai from Sharjah and there were 231 passengers on board.

The incident occurred at around 3:23 am. The flight, an Airbus A320 model, was heading towards the terminal from runway G9 471. After the incident, the pilot immediately stopped the plane and informed the airport authorities.

After this CISF, bomb disposal squad and other security agencies reached the spot. The security personnel have taken the accused passenger into custody. The accused has been identified as 29-year-old Mohammad Sharif Mohammad Najmuddin.

He is a resident of Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu. At present he is being interrogated and his mental condition is also being examined. Due to the incident, operations at the airport were also affected for some time.

Many flights were delayed, one had to be diverted

According to an official, following the incident the main runway (07/25) was closed at 3:25 pm due to safety reasons. Runway operations were resumed at about 4:35 p.m.

During this period many flights were delayed. British Airways flight BA0035 coming from London was diverted to Bengaluru. Some operations were conducted from the secondary runway (12/30) during the main runway closure.

Claim- The accused had jumped from the flight

Some media reports claimed that the accused was mentally ill and had even jumped from the plane after opening the emergency gate. However, security agencies are investigating the matter.

Chennai Airport is a major aviation hub in South India. There are two cross runways – main runway 07/25 and secondary runway 12/30. More than 2 crore passengers travel through this airport every year. It is a major gateway for flights to and from Gulf countries.
