Emraan Hashmi’s new film ‘Haq’ presents sensitive topics like Muslim Personal Law, Uniform Civil Code and Shah Bano Case with truth and balance. In this film, Emraan Hashmi plays the character of Shah Bano’s husband ‘Mohammed Ahmed Khan’, who is at the center of controversy in a courtroom drama. Recently, Imran had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar about this film. Here are some highlights..

Emraan Hashmi’s film ‘Haq’ is scheduled to release in theaters on 7 November 2025.
Question: The film ‘Haq’ talks about many issues like Muslim Personal Law, Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and Shah Bano case. Which are generally not discussed much. And whenever it happens, it forces one to think. When you first heard the story of this film, did you feel more responsibility or did it seem like a challenge?
answer: Both. The film is inspired by the Ahmed Khan and Shah Bano case, which took place in 1985. I knew a little about this case, but not in depth. Our director and writer have shown this story in a very balanced and without bias. In this, the beginning of the relationship between two people, their love, marriage and then their mutual conflict has been shown very truthfully.
The story later becomes a thrilling courtroom drama. Actually, this film is a beautiful story full of emotion and humanity. This is its real strength. Because a story is not made just by court debates, human emotions are necessary in it. Many deep issues like woman’s voice, meaning of justice and the need for change in society have been raised in the film.
Question: It is often said that films are the mirror of the society, and sometimes even show the mirror to the society. Will the film ‘Haq’ answer some such questions?
answer: It is difficult to say what the audience will think after watching the film. When the real case happened, people were divided into two groups. On one hand, people had their own religious and traditional beliefs, and on the other hand, there was talk of equal justice as per the Constitution. Shahbano had said that she is an Indian Muslim woman and she wants justice under the secular law of the country.
This is the core of the story of this film. When the court’s decision came, some people accepted it and some disagreed. A good film is one which creates discussion and thinking among people after it ends. If ‘Haq’ raises questions among people, then that will be the beginning of real change.

Question: The effect of an old decision of the Supreme Court is still visible today. Even after 40 years, when we talk about Uniform Civil Code (UCC), its impact on the society and politics of the country is visible. Even today the debate on this continues and many states are talking about implementing it. What is your opinion on this?
answer: I don’t want to go into politics. When I read the story of the film from an artist’s perspective, I felt that it is a film based on women’s rights. It tells how sometimes after the breakdown of marriage, men run away from their responsibilities and women struggle with children. They don’t know where to get justice.
This film gives courage to such women to fight for justice. Just like Shah Bano had fought. It also forces men to think that we live in a male-dominated society and we need to change our attitudes.
Question: In the film, you played the role of fighting the system for your faith and truth. Have you ever had to fight for your rights in real life?
answer: Yes, absolutely. There come such moments in every person’s life when he has to stand up for his right thoughts and beliefs. I don’t remember any specific occasion now, but there have been many times when I have stood up for my way of thinking and principles. This is a lesson not only for respect for women but also for men that if you are right, then do not remain silent, speak for your rights.
Question: How do you feel when Yami Gautam praises you so much? Were there any memorable moments during the shooting?
answer: Yami Gautam is a brilliant actress. She plays each of her characters with great hard work and sincerity. I learned a lot while working with him. His way of working and dedication is praiseworthy. Working with him was a special experience for me, because I got to learn something new from him every day.

Question: When your name comes up, people expect intense scenes, romance and great acting. Besides, your songs are also liked a lot. This movie also has a lovely and heart touching song named “Kabool, Kaboul”. What would you say about its music?
answer: Its music is very beautiful. Vishal has given excellent music as per the mood and story of the film. Its tune, its feel, everything is connected to the film. The emotion and connection in the song has made it special. Vishal Mishra has captured that emotion very well.
Question: From the films ‘Footpath’ to ‘Haq’, how do you see your evolution or growth as an actor in the intensity and romance seen in your characters?
answer: To tell you the truth, I don’t know myself. Every film teaches something new. I get to learn a lot from the people I work with, directors and co-actors. For many years, my endeavor has been to play a different character every time and become a better actor with every film.
I never think that now I have become completely successful, because the day an actor starts thinking this, his journey stops.
In ‘Haq’ also, I learned a lot from my director, writer and the entire team. If you take every film as a new learning then your career lasts longer. But if you stop learning, your career ends quickly. Only those who keep improving their craft survive in the industry.
