Kaivarta, a small village in Nagaon city of Assam. Population of 2200. Whoever you meet here will start telling the story of one of his kidneys. 40% of the people in the village have only one kidney in their body.

Actually, due to drug addiction and financial crisis, these people have sold one of their kidneys. Seeing their condition, brokers would contact them. Then he was taken to Kolkata, where after the operation one of his kidneys was removed.

Police have arrested three smugglers Dharni Das, Mahendra Das and Deepdas, who were running a racket of taking kidneys of the poor. All three were running this racket for a long time. This matter came to light recently during an awareness meeting against illegal liquor and drugs in the village.

20% people in the village work and 10% do farming. The rest are unemployed. In that awareness meeting, it was revealed that despite getting the benefits of government schemes, the villagers were suffering from economic distress, hence they used to buy kidneys from brokers for Rs 3 to 6 lakh.

Took in the name of medical examination, kidney removed

Another victim told that we had taken people to Kolkata in the name of medical examination. Then after rendering him unconscious the kidney was taken out. We came to know about it months later. Today many victims like us are lying ill. This has now become an ‘open secret’ within the village. Everyone knows about it, but no one speaks.

Villager said- emotionally arrested

A villager told that when some married women of the village left their in-laws’ house and went to their maternal home, such men were emotionally captured by the brokers. Then he was persuaded to sell his kidney by luring him with commission and employment.

The gang became active again after the lockdown

A similar organ trade racket was busted in South Dharamatul in Morigaon district during the 2020 lockdown. 20 poor people were implicated in that case. A woman named Lilimai Bada from Guwahati was arrested as the main kingpin.

Even in 2021, Deepak Singh of Huj village of Nagaon was lured to Kolkata with the lure of ‘guard job’. There, a conspiracy was hatched to remove his kidney in the name of medical test, but Deepak became suspicious and ran away.

The business was going on for years, even took kidneys of wives

According to the head of Huj-Cabarta village, this illegal business was going on for many years. Due to poverty, illegal liquor trade and compulsion to sell kidneys, the village is turning into a society of disabled people.

People told that in many houses of the village today both husband and wife have sold one kidney each. If there are five members in a family, three of them have already sold.
