According to the report of American radio NPR, the Trump administration has signed agreements with 16 big pharmaceutical companies since September last year. These agreements were called ‘Most Favored Nation (MFN)’ deals. In return, pharmaceutical companies will get exemption from tariffs on imported medicines for 3 years.
This plan is believed to be related to election promises and ‘America First’ health policy. Trump says that other rich countries buy medicines made in America at low prices, while Americans have to pay three times more for them. This program will ensure that pharmaceutical companies sell medicines at the same prices that are available in other countries.
American companies will have to sell medicines at lower prices
American companies spend crores and trillions of rupees on research, testing and manufacturing of medicines. This medicine is sold all over the world. This medicine is very expensive in America, whereas in rich countries like Europe, Canada, Japan, the same medicine is available very cheap.
In fact, the governments of those countries demand to buy the medicine at a lower price and if they do not do so, there is a risk of stopping the deal. The company fears that it may lose the market, so it gives a lower price there.
Trump believes that the American people provide the majority of the world’s income, from which new medicines are made. Foreign countries take advantage of this by paying less money. According to Trump, he ‘free rides’ on America’s hard work.
Therefore, it has been decided in this MFN program that now the price of medicines in America will be the lowest which is available in any rich country. Companies were asked to give the same cheap deal to America.
Due to this, foreign countries will also have to pay higher prices, like the price of new medicines has been increased by 25% in the agreement with Britain. American patients will get cheaper medicines, the extra money of the companies will come back to America and the work of making medicines in the country will increase.

Why drug companies are scared of TrumpRx
- The biggest thing about TrumpRx is that the government wants to directly interfere in deciding the prices of medicines. Till now, pharmaceutical companies in America decide the prices of their new medicines themselves. If TrumpRx goes into effect, drug prices will be set by the government. Pharmaceutical companies fear that this will directly reduce their profits.
- The second big reason is that under TrumpRx, America can base the price of cheap medicines sold abroad.
