Trump was angry with Maduro over drug smuggling

US President Donald Trump had declared Nicolas Maduro a narco-terrorist since 2020. Maduro was accused of being involved in drug trafficking, helping to transport cocaine to the US.

In Trump’s eyes, it was not just about drugs. It was a game of Venezuelan oil wealth and political control. The US had been planning against Maduro for months, and now they were preparing to take a big step.

America made a foolproof plan to catch Maduro

The responsibility of capturing Maduro was entrusted to America’s most dangerous and special unit, Delta Force. In Kentucky city of America, the Joint Special Operations Command made a full-scale model of Maduro’s compound i.e. Rashtrapati Bhavan and practiced the attack.

This mission was named ‘Operation Absolute Resolve’ (complete solution to the problem). The commandos would practice day and night. Increase their speed in breaking steel doors, learn to navigate in the dark, and prepare to face every possible threat.

America gathered information about Maduro’s whereabouts

Delta Force knew that due to tension and war-like conditions, Maduro does not stay in any one place. They were staying at 6 to 8 places one by one. America could not find out where they were going to stay until late in the evening.

To carry out the operation, the US military needed to know that Maduro was present in the compound they planned to attack. Therefore, precise timing was essential.

The force was waiting for good weather and a time when the risk of civilian casualties was minimal.

America before the attack Increased deployment of fighter planes

In the days leading up to the raid, the US increased deployment of special operations aircraft, electronic warfare ships, Reaper drones, search and rescue helicopters and fighter jets to the area.

Last This additional deployment in time was an indication that the US military was fully prepared for the operation. A week before the attack the CIA conducted a drone strike on a Venezuelan port, meant to destroy a drug shipment.

America has been carrying out air strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific for the last 4 months. Trump claims that this boat was carrying drugs. More than 115 people were killed in this.

Maduro put forward a deal to the Trump administration on December 23 to stop US attacks. In this, Maduro proposed to America to provide access to Venezuelan oil.

However, Trump asked Maduro to leave the country and go to Turkey. This made Maduro angry and rejected the deal. On this, an American official said that Trump knew that Maduro was not serious.

After the attack, about 10 planes were seen flying at low altitude in the capital Caracas.

The attack plan was postponed due to bad weather

Trump had given permission for the US Army to proceed on December 25 itself, but left the decision on the exact timing to Pentagon officials and those leading the operation.

Officials chose the Christmas holidays as many Venezuelan officials were on leave and army personnel had gone home. However, the weather in Venezuela was bad at this time, so the operation was postponed.

Finally, the weather cleared on the night of 3 January 2026. Assets started launching from 4:30 pm onwards. Special operations aircraft, electronic warfare planes, armed reaper drones, search-and-rescue helicopters and fighter jets. All of them gathered in the region.

Trump was having dinner at his club at Mar-a-Lago, where Cabinet members and aides were present. At 10:30 pm, Trump got a call for the final go-order.

Trump gave approval at 10:46, and then went into the secure room and began live monitoring. “I watched it just like I was watching a television show,” Trump said.

Trump took control of Venezuela

After the US arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and President Trump’s announcement of taking control of Venezuela, many questions have been raised regarding international law and the power of the President.

The Trump administration has not yet publicly stated how it will run Venezuela. When Trump was asked whether U.S. troops would be deployed to Venezuela to help govern him, he responded, “No. If the Vice President does what we want, we won’t need to do that.”

This raises the question of how the US President will govern Venezuela if Rodriguez refuses to step down. Rebecca Ingber, a professor at the Cardozo School of Law and a former senior counsel at the State Department, said she sees no legal way for the US to control Venezuela.

He said that under international law this is an illegal occupation and under domestic law the President has no authority to do so.
