America on Friday suspended the Green Card Lottery or Diversity Visa (DV1) program. Through this, green cards were given to people from underrepresented countries in America.
This decision has been taken after the shooting at Brown University on December 14 and the shooting death of a professor at the home of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) University on December 15.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that this lottery program has been stopped on the instructions of President Trump so that no more Americans are injured in such incidents. He reminded that Trump had also tried to end the program after the truck attack in New York City in 2017.
Know what is the Green Card Lottery Program…
The Green Card Lottery or Diversity Visa Program (DV1) is a system that annually grants green cards to people from underrepresented countries in the United States through a lottery. Every year around 50,000 people are selected under this program.
This lottery system was implemented in 1990 so that people from different countries could get a chance to come to America. In the year 2025, about 20 million people had applied for this lottery.
Winners were also included along with their spouses and children, making a total of more than 131,000 people. After their preliminary investigation, 50 thousand people will be selected.
Indians will not be affected by this. Countries like India, China, Canada and the United Kingdom are not included in this because more people from there already come to America.
Opponents of Trump DV1 program
President Donald Trump has long opposed the Diversity Visa (DV1) program. He said that some people coming through this lottery can create security or other problems in America.
Earlier in November, there was a deadly attack on National Guard members, in which an Afghan man was found to be the gunman. After that incident, the Trump administration further tightened immigration rules for people coming from Afghanistan and other countries.

The students killed in the shooting at Brown University were identified as Ella Cook, 19, and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18.
Two people were killed in the shooting that took place on December 14 at Brown University in Providence city of Rhode Island state of America. Police said the main suspect in the case was 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente. He came to America in 2017 through the Diversity Lottery and got a green card.
Ella Cook, 19, and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, were killed and nine others were injured in the incident. Valente is believed to be involved in the December 15 murder of Portuguese professor Nuno Loureiro of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Police found Valente dead in a storage facility in New Hampshire after a six-day search. He had two guns and a bag. Christina Paxon, president of Brown University, said Valente was pursuing a PhD in physics here in 2000-2001, but he had no active affiliation with the university.
