Delhi High Court on Friday said that Amitabh Bachchan will have to appear in court himself to continue his personality rights case. According to Bar and Bench reports, Justice Purushendra Kumar Kaurav gave this direction. The court has given Bachchan time to complete the formalities of the settlement with some defendants. The court said that if a settlement is not reached with one or more defendants and Bachchan wants to proceed with the case, his personal presence will be necessary in the next hearing. Amitabh Bachchan had filed this case demanding a permanent ban to protect his personality rights. The formalities of the settlement were not completed. The court was told that a settlement had been reached with some of the defendants. However, the agreement could not be formally signed due to some logistical issues from the actor’s side. During the hearing on October 9, the court was told that a settlement had been reached with some of the defendants. However, a formal agreement is yet to be signed. “If no settlement is reached or the settlement remains incomplete and the plaintiff wishes to continue the case on any claim or issue, his personal presence in the next hearing will be necessary,” the court ordered. The court said that this will enable it to exercise its powers under Section 168 of the Indian Evidence Act, 2023, read with Order X Rule 2 and Order V Rule 3 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908. What is the whole matter? In the year 2022, Amitabh Bachchan had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the commercial use of his voice, name, face (image) and other personality traits without permission. He had alleged that many people were misusing his identity. His identity was being misused in many fake KBC lottery scams, WhatsApp messages and mobile apps. After this, in November 2022, the court had issued an interim order in his favor, under which no person can commercially use his name, voice or photo without his permission. The court had also directed the concerned government departments and telecom companies to take necessary action. This included blocking phone numbers spreading such messages, along with removing some of the links and websites mentioned in the complaint. Other members of Bachchan’s family had also approached the court. Other members of Amitabh Bachchan’s family had also approached the court against the misuse of their identity. In April 2023, the matter of misleading videos running on YouTube regarding the health of Abhishek Bachchan’s daughter Aaradhya Bachchan also reached the Delhi High Court. The court had given instructions to remove such videos. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had filed a petition on September 9, 2025, demanding a ban on the alleged misuse of her name, pictures and voice. The allegation was that many websites and YouTube channels were using his identity to broadcast AI-generated videos and other content. The next day, on September 10, 2025, the court also gave relief in the case of Abhishek Bachchan. Their photographs, names, voices and identities were allegedly being used to create misleading videos using AI to sell T-shirts, cups and other items. In November 2025, Jaya Bachchan also approached the court against tampering of her pictures, fake videos and selling merchandise without permission.
