Her parents and brother also live in a rented room at the academy. Earlier, she used to come here from her village to practice.”

On Anshu’s fake video going viral a few months before the Olympics, he says, “The family and I had full faith in Anshu. Exposure to wrong things affects the mentality. We told Anshu to focus on wrestling training. There are people with poor mentality in the society, there is no need to worry about them. Mischievous people had made her wrong video viral by editing it. The police arrested those people. The accused said that he did this to become famous.”

Anshu never refused to practice

Both parents left their jobs
Anshu’s maternal grandmother Bugal Devi said, “For Anshu, her mother Manju left her job as a teacher. My daughter Manju is an MA B.Ed. She taught in a private school for 10 years. When Anshu started going out, Manju left her job. Because Anshu has a problem eating outside food. So she goes with Manju so that she can get home-cooked food. Even now she has gone to Paris with her. Anshu’s father Dharamveer was in CSF. When Anshu and her brother Shubham started doing better in wrestling and Anshu started going to international competitions, her father left his job and focused on training.”

Anshu’s grandfather, uncle and father are also wrestlers
Bugal Devi said, “Anshu’s grandfather, uncle and father have all been wrestlers. There has been an atmosphere of wrestling in his house since the beginning. Anshu’s father has represented the country at the junior level. His uncle has also represented Haryana and the country at the junior level.”

Nani is staying in hostel so that Anshu’s brother’s preparation doesn’t get disrupted
Bugal Devi says, “So that Anshu does not face any problem in his preparation, both his mother and father have gone with him. Anshu’s brother also wrestles. He was alone and so that he gets home-cooked food, I am staying in the hostel.”

Anshu started wrestling at the age of 11
Anshu’s younger brother Shubham said, “There is a wrestling environment in our family from the very beginning. I started wrestling when I was 9 years old. Seeing me, Didi also started wrestling at the age of 11. Initially, my father got me trained in the village. Both my father and uncle have been wrestlers. So no one at home stopped me from wrestling, we got full support. Didi won her first medal in the 2016 Asian Cadet Championship, where she won the silver medal. In 2016, she also won the bronze medal in the World Cadet Championship. Then she never looked back.”

Silver medal in Commonwealth Games
