Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah has said that he will not contest the 2028 assembly elections. However, he will remain active in politics and continue raising public issues. On Saturday, he met K.R. of Mandya district. Speaking at a program organized in Pet, he said – Politics has now become completely corrupt and there is no room left for honest politics. Siddaramaiah said- I am now 79 years old. There is still about one and a half year left in the tenure of our government. By then I will be 81-82 years old. My health is not as strong as before. Now it is not possible to work with the same enthusiasm as before. This statement of Siddaramaiah has come two months after he left the post of CM. Siddaramaiah had resigned from his post on May 28 under the instructions of the Congress high command and the rotational CM formula (dividing the 5-year tenure between two or more leaders). He was the Chief Minister from 20 May 2023 to 28 May 2026. After him D.K. Shivkumar was made the Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah said – 50 years of political life will be completed in 2028. Siddaramaiah said on social media post – People of Varuna assembly constituency are once again pressurizing me to contest elections. But I have decided that I will not contest any further elections. Earlier, when I used to contest elections, people of the area used to give us money and ensure our victory. But this is no longer the case. Siddaramaiah said- Now such a time has come that if they want to contest elections, then the leaders have to pay money to the people. In view of these circumstances, I have decided not to contest any election in future. By 2028 I will be 82 years old. At that time my political career will be completed 50 years. Siddaramaiah said – Never worked against my principles. Former CM further said – I am satisfied that I never worked against my principles nor compromised with my conscience. For the last five decades, the people of the state have treated me as their own and given me love and guidance. I always feel this debt to him. Therefore, my future life will also be dedicated to serving the public. Siddaramaiah was not ready to leave the post of CM after two and a half years. At the time of formation of Congress government in Karnataka in 2023, the formula of tenure of two and a half years each was in discussion between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar regarding the post of Chief Minister. After completion of two and a half years of Siddaramaiah on 20 November 2025, the demand for change of power intensified. DK Shivakumar and his supporters started pressurizing to implement the so-called ‘secret deal’, but Siddaramaiah continued to deny it. Amidst the growing controversy, the Congress high command called both the leaders to Delhi and held talks and the matter calmed down for some time. On May 20, 2026, when Siddaramaiah completed three years as Chief Minister, the discussion of change of leadership started again. The Congress high command summoned him to Delhi. Before the meeting, he demonstrated his strength by having breakfast with his supporting ministers and MLAs at Karnataka Bhawan. After this, several rounds of meetings were held between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. According to reports, the high command made proposals like sending Siddaramaiah to Rajya Sabha and making his son Yatindra Siddaramaiah a minister. Finally, on May 28, Siddaramaiah announced his resignation in the cabinet meeting and later submitted his resignation.
