The United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has announced a fresh Cabinet reshuffle, bringing several Indian-origin lawmakers into prominent government roles.
Kanishka Narayan has been brought into the Cabinet as Minister for Artificial Intelligence, while Satvir Kaur and Harpreet Uppal have also been handed key positions. Their appointments signal a noticeable increase in representation for MPs of Indian origin within the Labour government.
With the inclusion of Uma Kumaran, a Hindu MP of Sri Lankan Tamil background who has been named a junior minister in the Foreign Office, the front bench now features a mix of two Hindu and two Sikh ministers.
The reshuffle, however, also moved some familiar faces out of frontline roles. Seema Malhotra, who previously handled the Indo-Pacific brief, and former junior health minister Preet Kaur Gill have both been shifted to the backbenches.
The two were widely seen as close to former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer. Andy Burnham rose within the Labour party as a rival to his centrist predecessor.
Elsewhere, Lisa Nandy, whose father was born in Kolkata, continues as Culture Secretary and remains a member of the Cabinet.
Who Is Kanishka Narayan?
Kanishka Narayan’s journey to Cabinet began far from Westminster. Born in Muzaffarpur in Bihar, his family relocated to Wales when he was only 12. He later studied at Eton, Oxford and Stanford before entering public life. Elected as MP for Vale of Glamorgan in July 2024, he went on to serve in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
On July 20, 2026, he was promoted to the newly created Artificial Intelligence portfolio, working across the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.
Who Is Satvir Kaur?
Satvir Kaur, who represents Southampton Test, also entered Parliament in July 2024. The daughter of Punjabi immigrants who ran a saree shop in Southampton, she now holds dual roles as Minister for Equalities in the Housing, Communities and Local Government Ministry and as a minister in the Home Office. Her responsibilities span safeguarding, tackling violence against women and girls, and equality issues. She had earlier served in the Cabinet Office before taking maternity leave between September 2025 and February 2026, returning to government duties this year.
Who Is Harpreet Uppal?
Harpreet Uppal, MP for Huddersfield, has been appointed Assistant Whip, a role central to managing party discipline and coordinating parliamentary business. First elected in July 2024, she formally assumed the position on July 22, 2026. Before entering Parliament, she was involved in Andy Burnham’s Greater Manchester mayoral campaign in 2017.
