Malaysia has implemented new rules banning children under 16 from creating social media accounts. Now platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube will have to make arrangements to check age. Users under 16 years of age will not be able to create an account. For breaking the rules, a fine of up to 25 lakh dollars i.e. about Rs 24 crore can be imposed on the companies. However, if children somehow create an account by breaking the rules, then no action will be taken against their parents. The government says that this step has been taken to protect children from harmful content, cyber bullying and social media addiction. Apart from Malaysia, Australia, Brazil and Indonesia have also brought or are preparing strict rules on children’s social media use. However, some experts said that the condition of checking age from government ID may increase concerns about data privacy. At the same time, Meta has warned that a complete ban may lead children to go to unsupervised platforms.
