Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left for a three-day visit to South Africa today i.e. Friday morning. Modi is expected to reach South Africa by 6 pm today. He will participate in the 20th summit of G20 countries to be held in Johannesburg.
This time the G20 meeting is being hosted by South Africa. PM Modi will be in South Africa from 21 to 23 November. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister will speak in three main sessions.
During the summit, PM Modi will also meet separately with leaders of many countries. Apart from this, he will also attend the meeting of India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) countries.
This is Modi’s fourth official visit to South Africa. Earlier, Modi had gone for a bilateral visit in 2016 and then two BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump has boycotted the G20 summit. No official from America is participating in it.

Modi said- This is the first G20 summit to be held in Africa
Before leaving, Modi issued a statement saying – I am going on a visit from 21-23 November to participate in the 20th G20 Summit being held in Johannesburg under the chairmanship of South Africa. This visit is taking place at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Modi further said that this summit will be special as it will be the first G20 summit to be held in Africa. During India’s presidency of the G20 in 2023, the African Union became a member of the G20.
Modi said- This summit will be an opportunity to discuss major global issues. The theme of this year’s G-20 is ‘Solidarity, Equality and Stability’, through which South Africa has built on the outcomes of previous summits held in New Delhi, India and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He said that he would like to represent India in this summit. Will again put forward the vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ i.e. ‘One Family and One Future’. Whereas Modi Said to attend IBSA summit. Modi during this visit Will also meet Indian expatriates living in South Africa.
Trump will not attend G20 summit
US President Donald Trump has said that he will not attend the G20 summit. He has claimed that human rights violations are taking place in South Africa.
Trump had posted on social media and alleged that white farmers are being tortured in South Africa. Therefore no American official will go there.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also announced not to attend the summit. In response to this, South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, said that G20 has now become such a big platform that its work does not stop due to the absence of one country.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, this decision has been taken due to South Africa’s anti-American stance.
What is G20?
G20 (Group of Twenty) is a group of the world’s 20 largest economies. European Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, Britain and America are included in this.
These countries account for 85% of global economic activities and 75% of trade.
The first G20 summit took place in 2008.
In 1997-98, many countries in Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Korea etc.) were facing economic crisis. At that time only G7 (7 rich countries) used to take decisions, but the crisis was in Asia.
G7 realized that now only 7 countries can run the world together, but developing countries like India, China, Brazil will also have to be included. These countries created the G20 in 1999. Initially it was a forum of only finance ministers and central bank governors. Then in 2008, it was decided that not only the Finance Minister, but also the President and Prime Minister of the countries would participate in it. The first Leaders’ Summit was held in Washington in November 2008. After this this summit is held every year.
