Muslim Law Board spokesperson Dr S.Q.R. Ilyas said Modi deliberately used the term Secular Civil Code instead of Uniform Civil Code in his speech from the Red Fort.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has said that Muslims do not accept a uniform or secular civil code. They will never compromise on Sharia law (Muslim Personal Law). The Muslim Law Board said that Prime Minister Modi’s statement from the Red Fort on Independence Day calling religious personal laws communal is objectionable.

Muslim Personal Law Board spokesperson Dr SQR Ilyas said in a press statement, “Modi deliberately used the term Secular Civil Code in place of Uniform Civil Code. The PM is misleading the country.

Dr SQR Ilyas said that uniform means it will apply to the whole country, all religious and non-religious people. There will be no scope for excluding any class or caste, even tribals. However, Modi is only targeting Sharia law.

Ilyas said that Modi does not want to offend any other community. By calling laws based on religions communal, he has not only copied the western countries but has also insulted the majority of people of India who follow the religion.

The Muslim Personal Law Board’s press release further read, Indian Muslims have stated many times that their family laws are based on Sharia. No Muslim can break it at any cost. The country’s legislature itself has approved it.

The Shariat Application Act, 1937 and the Constitution of India have declared the right to propagate and practice religion as a fundamental right under Article 25. Family laws of other communities are also based on their own religious and ancient traditions. Hence, tampering with them and trying to make secular laws for all is breaking religion and imitating the West.

Ilyas further said that for those who want to live their family life away from any religious bond, Special Marriage Act 1954 and Indian Succession Act 1925 already exist.

Modi had said from the Red Fort- there should be a secular civil code in the country

On 15 August, on the 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Modi hoisted the tricolor at the Red Fort. In his 103-minute speech, the PM said that after independence, the countrymen had to go through the Mai-Baap culture. We have changed this model of governance. The country has had a communal civil code for 75 years. Now the country needs a secular civil code.
