Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan met former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on Thursday. This meeting took place amidst the ongoing political discussions regarding the new alliance of the opposition after the defeat of Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
This meeting is important because a few days ago, senior Samajwadi Party leader Kiranmoy Nanda, during his visit to Kolkata, had held Banerjee responsible for TMC’s defeat in the elections and had said that people did not want Mamata Banerjee for the fourth consecutive time.
The car in which Jaya Bachchan reached her house to meet former CM Mamata was being driven by TMC MP Derek O’Brien himself. As soon as Jaya Bachchan reached in front of Mamata Banerjee’s house, Abhishek Banerjee present there touched her feet.
After BJP’s landslide victory in West Bengal, his statements had further fueled speculations about the growing distance between these two INDIA alliance partners.
On the political importance of this meeting, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that Bachchan and Banerjee have had personal relations for a long time.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “Jaya Bachchan and Mamata Banerjee know each other for a long time. Jaya Bachchan likes Mamata Banerjee very much and they have been in regular touch over the years. It was a courtesy call.”
Shortly after the election results, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had gone to Kolkata and met Banerjee at her residence. This meeting was seen as a show of solidarity towards the TMC chief after his election defeat.
Political experts say that Bachchan’s visit shows that despite the recent public criticism of some Samajwadi Party leaders, the paths of dialogue are open between the two opposition parties.
The state’s ruling BJP has also given a sharp reaction to this meeting.
Senior BJP leader and West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul raised questions on the current condition of TMC amid the ongoing internal discord in the party.
Paul said, “Anyone can come to Mamata Banerjee’s house. This is their democratic right under the freedom of speech and movement anywhere. But right now I do not know whether TMC actually survives or not. TMC has been divided into many pieces and we cannot even count how many pieces it has in the state or Delhi.”
He said that it is also not known what is the position of the party inside the West Bengal Assembly.
The minister further said, “We are really confused as to who is the real TMC, who is Team B and who is Team C. We have no problem with Jaya Bachchan ji going to Mamata Banerjee’s house. We are worried about the future of TMC.”
