For the next 57 days from today, the chants of Baba Barfani will echo in the high valleys of the Greater Himalayas. Amarnath Yatra has started. Till August 28, more than 4 lakh devotees will be able to have darshan of the naturally formed Shivalinga in the holy cave situated at 3,888 meters.
On Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha sent the first batch from Bhagwati Base Camp in Jammu to Baltal and Pahalgam. The group comprised of 4,822 pilgrims, who left in a escort of 259 vehicles.
Both the enthusiasm of the devotees and the security arrangements are more than last year. However, the weather is not good. Passengers will have to return down immediately after darshan. Oxygen booths have also been installed every 2km. Weather updates will be available on screens at 4 places on the Domel route.
It is noteworthy that Amarnath Yatra can be done through the traditional 48 km long Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag or the shorter 14 km long Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

100-100 bed hospitals on both routes
One thousand doctors and health workers are deployed on both the travel routes. State-of-the-art temporary hospitals with 100 beds each have been built at both the places.
- Baltal: If your health deteriorates while travelling, the first thing to do is to go to the ‘Medical Aid Centre’ near Domel Gate. Then there is the Emergency Medical Aid Center at Railpathri. Medical camp and oxygen will be available at Burari. Then there is the emergency medical center at Sangam top.
- Pahalgam: There is a big medical hospital at Nunwan Base Camp. A 100-bed main base hospital has been built at Chandanwadi. You can get tested here before climbing. There is also a medical aid center at Pissu Top. Then a base hospital has been built at the night rest stop in Sheshnag camp.
