Bangladesh on Sunday said it wants to reset its relationship with India. That is, it wants to start the relations between the two countries afresh.
Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said that the new relationship between the two countries should be built on the basis of mutual interests. He described India-Bangladesh relations as uneasy during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Kabir said that Dhaka wants to move towards a new relationship with New Delhi and for this there should be direct talks between the two countries. This conversation should not take place through any multilateral platform, but at the bilateral level.
‘We need to stop paying too much attention to India’
Kabir said that Bangladesh will have to come out of the mindset of paying excessive attention to relations with India.
He said that relations with India should be viewed in a balanced manner and focus should be on mutual interests. Relations with New Delhi are also a part of Bangladesh’s relations with other countries.
PM Rahman did not attend BRICS summit
This statement of Bangladesh has come after the end of the BRICS summit held in India. Bangladesh had said that Prime Minister Tariq Rahman would not attend the BRICS summit as he was not invited in his personal capacity.
According to Dhaka, he was invited as the Chairman of BIMSTEC. BIMSTEC is a regional organization of 7 countries in South and South-East Asia connected to the Bay of Bengal, which work together for mutual cooperation and development.
Rahman’s India tour was postponed in August also
Before BRICS, India had invited PM Tariq for a separate bilateral meeting between the two countries. He was to come to India on 22nd August, but this program was postponed even before the tour.
At that time Bangladesh had raised the issue of extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with India. There is already tension between the two countries regarding this issue.
On this, Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir had said at that time that,
When the environment is right, there will be bilateral visits. There is no need to rush.
Tension increases between India and Bangladesh after Hasina’s press conference
Actually, on August 5, Sheikh Hasina held a virtual press conference in Delhi. In this, he answered the questions of journalists on the second anniversary of the removal of the Awami League government from power and also expressed his views on the politics of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh government expressed strong objection to this. Dhaka said that Hasina’s public political statement while in India could harm efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said that India was earlier warned about this but still India allowed them to hold this press conference. It is noteworthy that India had refused to stop Sheikh Hasina’s press conference.
India had said that their program was being organized by a private media organization. The government has nothing to do with this.
