The prayer meet of late film producer and former CBFC Chief Pahlaj Nihalani was organized on Saturday at ISKCON Temple in Juhu, Mumbai. Many Bollywood celebrities participated in this prayer meeting which took place from 5 pm to 7 pm and paid tribute to him. Pahlaj Nihalani died on June 4 at the age of 76. He was suffering from liver disease for a long time. Many actors from the film industry including Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Govinda, Chunky Pandey, Jackie Shroff and Farhan Akhtar attended the prayer meet. Everyone met the Nihalani family and expressed their condolences and remembered the late producer. Her pairing with Govinda and David Dhawan gave many hit films in the 90s. Apart from film production, he was also the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from 2015 to 2017. Pahlaj Nihalani’s career: Pahlaj Nihalani made his first film as a producer in 1982, Hathkadi, and this was the beginning of his film journey. After this, his second film Aandhi-Toofan was released in 1985, which gave him recognition as a producer in Bollywood. In the year 1986, he made the film Ilzaam, which gave Govinda his first big break. The film was a hit and Govinda got recognition across the country. Chunky Pandey entered Bollywood in 1987 through Aag Hi Aag. In the same year, Nihalani also made the film Gunahon Ka Vaishyas. In the 1990s, Pahlaj Nihalani produced superhit films like Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen. Aankhen proved to be one of the blockbuster films of that era. Govinda was given the first big break of his career. Govinda worked with Pahlaj Nihalani in blockbuster films like Aankhen, Shola and Shabnam. Some time ago, he had said on Govinda in the podcast Learn from the Legend, ‘After the film Aandhi Toofan, I wanted to make a film with Mithun Chakraborty and Shatrughan, but at that time Mithun and Shatrughan used to take 4-4 shifts. Because of this we did not make it. Then Rikku brought Rakesh and Govinda to me. They also brought photographs, but I did not like them. Didn’t like his look. At that time he did not fit in the role of advocate or inspector because of his height. But now he has become a star, you can get the star to do anything. Govinda and Pahlaj Nihalani worked together in a total of four films. These include Iljaam, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen and Rangeela Raja. When there was no work, Govinda was given Shola and Shabnam. In the same podcast, Pahlaj said, ‘Govinda had no work, then when we started Shola and Shabnam, we got him to do a comedy role for the first time. Then when there was no work, I got the film Aankhen done. There was a completely different role in both the films. Pahlaj Nihalani had said – Govinda is insecure. When Pahlaj Nihalani was asked whether many producers and directors did not want to work with Govinda because of his negative attitude, then in response he said, ‘When success is achieved, a man bears every pain, but when he comes down from the ladder of success, he suffers. Govinda had that problem from the beginning, because he considered himself insecure. ‘His father has been a big hero of Mehboob Khan. Made big pictures and had good producers, but incurred losses. After this he endured so much pain, many things were lost from his hands, he had to struggle. All those things were inside him. That insecurity remains. He had to get the money from somewhere. He had sibling responsibilities. He was busy with money, he had to do everything. ‘Because of this his attitude became like this. When the work and pressure became so much that you couldn’t leave, things escalated. Then it became a habit, it became an illusion. When a man does not behave, everyone damages him, otherwise if we search for a hero like Govinda, we will not find him. When Divya Bharti got hurt, the shooting was stopped. Pahlaj Nihalani had done the film Shola Aur Shabnam with Divya Bharti. In an interview, he shared an incident related to Divya Bharti’s dedication and told how he had to stop the shooting despite the actress’s refusal due to Divya Bharti’s injury. Pahlaj Nihalani had said, during ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ we used to shoot for 20 hours. We used to start shooting in the morning and after that back to back scenes, then dance and then other scenes were shot. One day I remember we were shooting in Ooty and Divya’s foot fell on a nail. He didn’t tell anything to anyone. ‘I was standing near the monitor when Divya came back for the shoot. He didn’t let anyone know that he was hurt. Even I could not understand, then he asked me for a handkerchief and tied it on the wound on his leg. When I asked her what happened, she did not say anything but I saw her leg bleeding and immediately got it packed up. Pahlaj Nihalani cast Divya Bharti as the lead actress opposite Govinda in the film ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1992). Despite the refusal, Divya Bharti forcefully reached the set. She further said, ‘Despite pack-up, she remained adamant on shooting, there was not a wrinkle on her face. I did the final pack up and informed the production people that shooting would not happen the next day but Divya did not agree. I had told her mother not to send Divya for shooting the next day so that she could rest. But at six in the morning, Divya came to the set and came to me with the keys from house-keeping and said, ‘Come on, get up, why are you still sleeping?’ She did not want to cancel the shoot due to her own reasons and then she agreed after shooting. I have many great memories with him. Dharmendra got upset with the retake, told Pahlaj – Am I a newcomer? The 1987 Dharmendra starrer film Aag Hi Aag was produced by Pahlaj Nihalani, while its director was Shibu Mitra. During the shooting, Dharmendra had to give 15 retakes for a scene, due to which he got irritated and scolded the director a lot. Many actors including Shatrughan Sinha, Neelam Kothari, Chunky Pandey and Gulshan Grover were seen with him in this film. After narrating this to the director, Dharmendra angrily said to Pahlaj Nihalani in front of everyone on the set – ‘Pahlaj, am I a newcomer who is making me do take after take?’ Old picture of Pahlaj Nihalani and Dharmendra. Was the Chief of CBFC from 2015-17, faced many allegations Pahlaj Nihalani was the Chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from 2015 to 2017. Many people had accused him of unnecessarily shortening violent and intimate scenes from films and due to this his tenure was controversial. He was criticized for shortening the kissing scene from the James Bond series film ‘Spectre’. Nihalani had reportedly asked for 69 cuts in Shahid Kapoor starrer ‘Udta Punjab’, which was much talked about. Later the Bombay High Court declared CBFC’s decision wrong and the film was released with only one cut. In 2017, the government removed him and made lyricist Prasoon Joshi the new chairman of CBFC. On imposing GST on movie tickets, he said – the industry is going through bad times. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had imposed 12-18 percent GST on movie tickets 2 years ago. On this, while talking to Dainik Bhaskar, Pahlaj Nihalani had said, there is no tax on entertainment in many countries, hence GST should be completely removed from the entertainment industry in India too. The government should think that efforts should be made to make more and more films to save our culture and language. At present, due to the kind of business that is coming, films are not being made on good subjects and to earn money, there has been a compulsion to make films on light subjects and vulgar content. Nihalani had further said, films are made for the common man. If even the smallest laborer watches movies, if movie tickets become cheaper and there is no tax on it, it will give a boost to single screen cinema.
