French Open women’s singles champion Mirra Andreeva was on Saturday, June 6, seen having a small funny moment to herself after she lifted the Suzanne Lenglen trophy at the wrong point and, on realising the mistake, gave an adorable expression and rushed to the correct spot, in a video that has now gone viral.

The 19-year-old Russian beat Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to claim the Roland Garros women’s singles title, becoming the youngest champion in Paris since Monica Seles, who was 18 when she bagged her third successive French Open crown in 1992.

In her excitement, Andreeva lifted the trophy at the wrong spot. Unaware of the mix-up, the Russian raised the silverware before officials stepped in to inform her that the official photo opportunity was scheduled to take place on a nearby elevated platform.

Andreeva’s surprised reaction drew smiles from those around her. Realising her mistake, she moved to the correct spot and lifted the trophy again for the waiting photographers. The light-hearted moment reflected the joy and youthful innocence of a teenager celebrating the biggest win of her career.

With her first-ever major crown, Andreeva became the first player, man or woman, born after 2005 to win a Grand Slam.

The Coupe Suzanne Lenglen will now take centre spot in Andreeva’s burgeoning trophy cabinet, which already features two WTA 1000 titles.

“I have been watching Roland Garros on TV since I was very, very young, so it is also a big dream of mine to win this tournament and I honestly can’t believe that I am holding this trophy right now,” Andreeva said while speaking after the match.

“Congrats to Maja for these amazing three weeks, passing through qualies, winning so many matches, defeating so many great players,” Andreeva added.
