On this controversy, Malayalam actor and filmmaker Harishree Yusuf has responded to the trollers by sharing a video on Instagram. Harishree said that applying Tilak is an Indian tradition of welcoming guests and the purpose of religion is to make humans better, not to make them fight among themselves. ‘Applying Tilak on the forehead is an insult to Islam’ Mammootty recently received the National Film Award for the film ‘Bhramyugam’. During his visit to Gujarat, tilak was applied on his forehead to welcome him. After this video surfaced, some users on X and Instagram started criticizing Mammootty. Many people, including a user named Abbas, wrote that being a Muslim, applying tilak on the forehead is against Islam and it is an insult to the religion. However, many fans defended Mammootty and called it just a cultural welcome. Malayalam actor Harishree Yusuf gave a befitting reply to the critics by releasing a video on the ‘frogs of the well’ trolling rhetoric on social media. Describing the trollers as ‘frogs in the well’, Yusuf said, we artists are not narrow minded, our thinking is broad. When you go to a big hotel or event, guests are welcomed by giving them bouquets and applying tilak on the forehead. This is not the promotion of any religion, but a tradition of Indian respect. He said, “The real purpose of religion is not to make people fight among themselves, but to make them better human beings. Coming on social media and abusing someone and then dragging religion into it is completely wrong.” Mammootty has won the National Award four times. Mammootty is a veteran actor of Malayalam cinema. In the year 2026, he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for his brilliant performance in the film ‘Bhramayugam’, which he shared with Bollywood actor Kartik Aryan. In the same year, the Government of India also awarded him the Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of art. Mammootty has won the National Award four times so far. In the years 2018 and 2019, when he posted a photo with his younger son Abram wearing a tilak on his forehead, many users commented that his action was against Islam. Similarly, Salman Khan has also been trolled for applying tilak on his forehead during Ganesh puja and family religious functions. Sara Ali and Aamir Khan have also been trolled. Saif Ali Khan and his daughter Sara Ali Khan have also faced such criticism. Whenever Sara Ali Khan shares pictures with Tilak-Sandalwood applied on her forehead during Kedarnath, Mahakal Temple of Ujjain or Kashi Vishwanath Darshan, some trollers raise questions on her being a Muslim and applying Tilak. Apart from this, actor Aamir Khan was also targeted on religious grounds on social media after performing Kalash-puja and applying Tilak on his forehead at the office puja ceremony and house warming occasions of his film.
