The Singapore government has decided to increase the salaries of the Prime Minister, ministers and other senior officials. The annual earnings of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is among the world’s highest paid leaders, will now increase by about ₹ 11 crore. Wong currently receives around 22 lakh Singapore dollars (about ₹16 crore) annually. After the increase, his annual package will be around Singapore Dollar 36 lakh (about ₹27 crore). That means their earnings will increase by more than 60%. In comparison, the annual salary of Indian Prime Minister Modi is around ₹ 20 lakh. According to this, Wong’s new annual income will be about 135 times more than Modi’s salary. The salary of ministers will also increase. At present, the base pay package of Singapore ministers is around 11 lakh Singapore dollars (₹8.20 crore). Under the new salary system, this will increase to around Singapore Dollar 12 lakh (₹8.95 crore). According to Wong, by the end of the tenure of the current government, the earnings of most of the ministers could reach around 13.5 lakh Singapore dollars (₹10 crore). Some part of his salary will increase depending on his performance. A part of the ministers’ earnings is linked to achieving the country’s goals like unemployment, people’s income and GDP growth. Resentment among common people, concern about jobs and inflation, the high salary of ministers in Singapore has been a matter of controversy for a long time. The income of common people is much less in comparison. The average annual income in the country is 5775 Singapore dollars i.e. about 4 lakh 30 thousand rupees. This time too the decision to increase the salary was criticized. Many people on social media termed this decision as ignoring the current problems of the people. People are worried about job losses, new graduates getting jobs and rising inflation. According to government data, the number of job losses in Singapore in the last quarter i.e. retrenchment reached the highest level in more than 5 years. However, some people also supported the government’s decision. He said that it is necessary to give responsibility to the ‘best people’ to run the country. Government’s argument – Higher salaries will reduce corruption. The Singapore government has been defending paying higher salaries to ministers for a long time. The government says that higher salaries reduce the greed of ministers to take bribes or commit corruption. Singapore is among the least corrupt countries in the world. It also consistently ranks high in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index. The government presents this as proof of the correctness of its salary system. ———————
