The police also suspect her friend in the case of attempted gangrape of an 18-year-old student at Delhi’s South Asian University (SAU). Police said on Thursday that the friend also had access to the mail ID from which obscene messages were sent to the victim.
In fact, the victim was receiving obscene and threatening messages on social media platforms from an email ID named ‘Aryan Yash’. Police investigation found that this email was accessible on multiple devices, one of which was the phone of the victim’s friend.
This incident happened on 12th October. The victim said in the complaint that four accused caught hold of him in the university campus and tore his T-shirt. The accused also tried to remove their pants. It is also alleged that one of the accused forcefully opened her mouth and fed her an abortion pill. However, the reason for giving the medicine has not been revealed.
First of all, understand the entire incident… first called to meet by e-mail, then threatened by sending nude photos. According to Vaishali’s statement recorded in the FIR, she was receiving emails from the mail ID named ‘Aryan Yash’ for 2-3 days. He was being asked to meet at the guest house at 11.27 pm. The next day the email came again, it was written in it that she was not agreeing to it. This time dirty messages and emojis were also sent to her. Vaishali told her two friends about the email. After this his friends went to look at that place at around 11:27 pm, but did not find anyone there.
Vaishali further said in the statement, ‘Next day again after 6 pm, I got WhatsApp and Telegram message. The photo on my e-mail profile was morphed and sent to me in a nude form. Messaged her that if she did not come to Gate No. 3 of the University within an hour, all the photos would be circulated in the University.
‘I messaged my friend and told her everything. After this again a message came, in which it was written – ‘You are taking too much time, I am standing outside your gate.’ You will see a girl in B-1 Block Compound, come with her to Gate No. 3 of the University. According to the FIR, at that very moment Vaishali’s friend was calling, but in panic she could not pick up the phone and left from the back side of the hostel.
The victim has alleged in the FIR that a few days before the incident, she was receiving obscene and threatening messages on email and social media.
Clothes were torn and rape was attempted in the campus building. Vaishali further said in the FIR, ‘I first went towards C-Block, there was a lot of crowd there. I thought that maybe one of the people who sent the message could be found here. After this I moved towards the Admin Block, but due to the crowd I went from there towards the Convocation Centre. Building work is going on here. No one comes here at night.
‘After walking a short distance we found a guard. He asked what happened. I told that I was going to have lunch in the mess and sat there at a short distance. Then the guard called someone. After some time a middle aged man came there. They started talking among themselves and came and stood near me. He again asked what happened, why did you come here. Just then two more boys arrived.
When I saw them and started leaving from there, one of them first tried to take off the jacket, while the other put his fingers in both my eyes. They started dragging me to an empty room near the convocation centre.
‘Meanwhile, one of them lifted up my T-shirt and started hitting and pressing my breasts. He was pulling my pants. In this struggle I fell. He climbed on my thigh and started trying to control me. Then he forcefully put a pill in my mouth and started kissing me. Then someone came out from Mess-1 with a food cart and hearing the sound, all four ran away.
Vaishali further said in the statement, ‘Even while running, all four of them beat me. When I woke up my phone was off. I switched on the phone and ran out from there. I was so nervous that I didn’t understand where I was going. I sat two-three times on the way. Then my roommate came and took me back to the hostel.
This is the same building of the Convocation Center in the university, where an attempt to gang rape a student took place.
Friend told… Vaishali was in shock the whole night, saying – don’t wear my clothes tear up Vaishali’s friend says, ‘There is no student in the campus with the name by which the e-mails were being sent to her. However, Vaishali told us that the person sending the e-mail knew the hostel room number and many other things.
According to the friend, Vaishali was in shock when she met him on the night of 12 October. His clothes were torn. He didn’t tell us anything the whole night even after asking.
While sleeping at night, she would suddenly wake up and start saying – Don’t tear my clothes. After waking up in the morning, he slowly narrated the entire incident. All this happened to him between 8 pm and 10 pm.
‘At around 9:30 in the morning, we told the whole thing to the hostel caretaker Anupama Arora but she started raising questions on Vaishali only. When we told her to take her to the hospital and report to the police, she started saying that we should change her clothes and ask her to take a bath, she will be fine.
Victim’s friend says, ‘Despite knowing everything since morning and seeing Vaishali’s condition, she neither called an ambulance quickly nor informed the police. There are CCTVs installed everywhere on the campus, the university should put everything in front.
Following protest and complaint by students, a case was registered at Maidan Garhi police station in South Delhi on the morning of 14 October.
Hostel caretaker said – clothes are not torn, they seem to be cut by blades. Dainik Bhaskar has also received an audio recording of hostel caretaker Anupama Arora regarding this incident. In this she is telling the students, ‘Don’t say that something wrong has happened. Because nothing has happened to the girl, she is just a little mentally disturbed.
‘Have you seen how his clothes are torn? If someone pulls the cloth, it will tear in a different way. It looks like it was cut by a blade. Someone she knew must have called, only then she must have gone there. How would any girl go alone? I’m pretty sure she went to someone she knew. I have been here for 15 years. Till date such a case has not happened here.
The victim has also complained in the FIR, ‘We called her at night but she said – I will come in the morning. Students were saying this since night but no one listened. The university did not want to include any outsider in it. I tried to tell everything to mom on video call but Anupama ma’am and the guard were covering me and were not letting me tell. Anupama madam said that you people have many boyfriends.
Students demonstrated in the administration block of the university in protest against the incident.
University officials received the news the next afternoon At 1:45 pm on October 13, hostel warden Rinku Gupta sent an e-mail to the university officials that Vaishali, a first year B.Tech student, was having panic attacks. She is trying to hurt herself. His T-shirt is torn.
It was further written in the e-mail – ‘Dr Priyadarshini (university doctor) has examined her and said that it could be a case of harassment. Dr. Priyadarshini has recommended registering an FIR and taking him to Safdarjung Hospital for a full check-up.
19 minutes later, at 2:04 pm, the Registrar of the University replied to the e-mail that this matter was discussed with Student Dean Dr. Navneet and he also advised to register an FIR. This should be done as soon as possible as also mentioned on the call.
However, students allege that despite having information since morning, the university administration did not give any information to the police. At around 3:30 in the afternoon, a student called and informed the police. Then the police reached the college and the victim was taken in an ambulance for medical examination.
On October 14, students demonstrated on the campus throughout the day demanding immediate investigation and suspension of the staff.
University Students said…. Suspend the caretaker and hostel warden University International Relations student Shivraj Singh Rathod is among those students who accompanied victim Vaishali to the hospital. He says that when he came to know on 12th, many students reached B-Block in the evening.
Shivraj says, ‘The university administration was trying to cover up this incident. They came to know about the incident long ago, but they did not inform the police. Vaishali was under a lot of stress due to the edited photo being sent through e-mail. On the basis of this, the university administration is saying that she was already under stress, she is not mentally well. Such words are being used for that.
Shivraj says that it is clear from the steps taken by the administration so far that an attempt was being made to suppress the case. Our demand is that the caretaker and hostel warden should be suspended because they tried to hide this incident. Shivraj questions why the police and the university are not identifying the guard about whom the victim has given the statement.
Another student of the university, Shubhangi Kesarwani also raises questions on the administration. She says, ‘If the warden was informed in the night itself that such an incident had happened, then how did he get so much courage to say that he will come in the morning.’
‘If this continues, these things will increase. The university will first have to sensitize its own staff.
Shubhangi also raises questions on the security of the campus. She says, ‘The road outside the university which connects to the main road is now completely immersed in darkness. I also roam around this campus at night. Now after such an incident, we will be afraid to go out at night. Even after receiving the complaint, till now the internal committee of the university has not punished anyone.
University administration said- immediate action after investigation will take After this incident, South Asian University has formed an investigation committee of 4 members on 13 October. This committee will submit the investigation report within 10 days. We spoke to SP Agarwal, OSD to University President KK Agarwal. He told that the police is investigating the matter, so we cannot tell much on it.
On allegations of delay in action, SP Aggarwal said, ‘As soon as the administration came to know, the incident was reported immediately. The picture will be clear only after the investigation is completed. Whoever is responsible, action will be taken against him. No findings have come to light yet. As soon as we get something, we will take immediate action.
Aggarwal claims that the university has requested the police to investigate the incident on priority basis.
South Asian University formed an investigation committee of 4 members on 13 October.
Police said – IP addresses are being extracted, CCTVs are also being searched. On this matter, a senior officer of Delhi Police said that the police is investigating all the statements of the victim. CCTV footage is also being scrutinized. No suspicious activity has been seen in the footage so far. The officer said, ‘The girl has said that some e-mail has been received, we are investigating it. Trying to find out the IP address of the person sending the e-mail.
‘There are cameras installed at almost all places inside the university, we are investigating it. Will take the victim to the spot and will investigate there also. We can also get the scene recreated. We will proceed with the investigation based on whatever she tells at the scene. Apart from this, we will also interrogate his friends.
