Omar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam Had recently filed new bail petitions. In these petitions, a recent decision of the Supreme Court was cited, in which questions were raised on the legal interpretation adopted regarding granting of bail. On this basis, both the accused had demanded bail from the court.
However, after hearing the case, the Karkardooma Court did not accept the arguments of both and rejected their bail petitions. simultaneously Omar Khalid And Sharjeel Imam will have to remain in jail for the time being in the 2020 Delhi riots big conspiracy case.
What is the whole matter?
In February 2020, communal violence broke out in North-East Delhi. More than 50 people died and hundreds were injured in this violence. A large number of houses, shops and religious places were also damaged.
The Special Cell of Delhi Police claimed in this case that the violence was not a sudden incident, but a big conspiracy was hatched behind it. On this basis, in September 2020, FIR number 59/2020 was registered under various sections of UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act) and Indian Penal Code. Many student leaders, social workers and other accused were arrested in this case, including Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.
The prosecution alleges that the accused planned violence under the guise of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). At the same time, Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other co-accused have denied these allegations and said that they have been implicated for political reasons and there is not enough evidence against them.
