In the Tamil film ‘Palayathamman’, a woman accidentally drops her child in a temple ‘hundi’ (donation box) and the child becomes ‘temple property’. A similar incident took place at Arulmigu Kandaswamy temple in Thiruppur near Chennai.

Actually, the iPhone of Dinesh, a devotee resident of Vinayagapuram, accidentally fell in the donation box of the temple. He contacted the temple administration to ask for the iPhone back. However, they had to return empty handed.

Temple officials told Dinesh that anything found in the hundi belonged to God. However, the temple administration offered them a SIM card and downloaded data from the phone.

Dinesh said – I was withdrawing money for charity, the phone itself fell. Dinesh had gone to the temple with his family a month ago. After the puja, he went to put money in the donation box. While he was taking out notes from his shirt pocket, his iPhone accidentally fell into the donation box. Since the donation box was kept at a height, he could not take out the phone. Panicked Dinesh contacted the temple authorities.

Donation box opens once in two months The matter is of November, but Dinesh had reached the temple on Friday, i.e. 20th December, to get his iPhone. Actually, according to the rules of the temple, the donation box is opened once in two months. Dinesh lodged a complaint with the temple administration about his phone falling. He was asked to come in December.

The temple administration said – the intention did not change after the offering, it is not clear Kumaravel, an official of the temple administration, said that Dinesh’s iPhone had fallen in the donation box, he had offered it or he changed his mind after the offering. It is not clear. The tradition of considering any thing found in the donation box as a temple and a deity will be followed. Therefore the phone will remain with the temple administration.
