The decision regarding ceasefire was taken in the cabinet meeting late on Tuesday night.

Israel’s War Cabinet has approved the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Ceasefire may come into effect in the next 24 hours. A cabinet meeting was held regarding this late on Tuesday night. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has already approved the ceasefire plan.

Just hours before the ceasefire was announced, Israel launched missile attacks on Lebanon’s capital Beirut, killing 10 people.

Earlier on Sunday, Hezbollah had launched the biggest attack on Israel so far. Hezbollah used more than 250 missiles for this attack. According to the report, Netanyahu had also discussed the ceasefire plan with Israeli officials on Sunday.

Israel killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in an attack on September 27. Three days later, Israel started a ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon late on the night of October 1.

Israeli leaders called ceasefire a wrong step

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has called Netanyahu’s decision of ceasefire a wrong step. Itamar said that if there is a ceasefire, it will give an opportunity to completely eliminate Hezbollah. This would be a historical mistake. Ben Gvir has long opposed the ceasefire with Hezbollah.

Apart from Ben Gvir, Benny Gantz, who was a part of Israel’s war cabinet, has asked Netanyahu to present information related to the ceasefire before the people. Benny Gantz resigned from the Israeli War Cabinet in June this year. He accused Netanyahu of not handling Gaza properly.

America made ceasefire deal

Last week, Amos Hochstein, a US official, met with Lebanese Prime Minister Nizab Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nibah Barry. During this period, there were talks between Israel and Hezbollah regarding ceasefire.

After talks in Lebanon, Amos reached Israel on Wednesday, where talks were held on finalizing the ceasefire. In this plan, a ceasefire has been proposed between Israel and Hezbollah for the next 60 days.

In these 60 days, work will be done between the two to implement permanent ceasefire. This plan has been prepared on the basis of UN Resolution 1701.

What is UN Resolution 1701

In July 2006, Hezbollah fighters crossed the Lebanon border and killed 8 Israeli soldiers. Apart from this, two soldiers were taken hostage. Through this, Hezbollah wanted to exchange prisoners with Israel.

However, Israel launched airstrikes and ground operations against Hezbollah in response to the deaths and hostage taking of soldiers. This war continued between the two for a month. After this, a proposal was brought in the UN regarding ceasefire between the two.

This proposal was accepted by the United Nations Security Council on 11 August 2006. This proposal itself is known as UN Resolution 1701.

According to this resolution, the land which was occupied by Israel along the southern border of Lebanon was vacated by Israel. Along with this, Lebanese troops were deployed in the areas vacated by Hezbollah.

Israel has eliminated the top leadership of Hezbollah

Israel had eliminated its top leadership in Lebanon even before it started ground operations. The biggest name in this was that of Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah. On September 27, Israel attacked Beirut, Lebanon with an 80 ton bomb.

Nasrallah was killed in this attack. Apart from Nasrallah, his successor Hashim Saifieddin was also killed by Israel in an attack on October 8.
