Mukesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore have not worked together in any film.
Senior actor Mukesh Khanna expressed his opinion on the ongoing debate regarding Vande Mataram. His comment came in response to senior actress Sharmila Tagore’s statement in which she had talked about singing only the initial parts of Vande Mataram instead of singing the entire song.
During a conversation with ‘The Free Press Journal’, Mukesh Khanna was told about Sharmila Tagore’s alleged suggestion, “She is speaking as per her understanding. I don’t know why she said this. Perhaps while explaining her point, it came out of her mouth that people of other religions will not be able to understand or accept it.”
Actor Mukesh Khanna has recently demanded that ‘Vande Mataram’ should be made the national anthem of India by replacing ‘Jana Gana Mana’.
Mukesh Khanna said, “You have grown up in Bengal, where Kali Puja is celebrated on such a large scale. You have grown up amidst Bengali culture and Bengali films. Then today you are understanding that people of one religion should not accept it. It did not come at that time. Did you come to know after we got married?”
He raised the question that when you became the Nawab’s Begum. Then you came to know that there is Muslim religion also. Hey, these people don’t believe. Believe in Allah. These people don’t even believe in our goddess.
He further said that today you are talking like Ayesha Begum. Today you are understanding Muslim religion. Have you forgotten Hinduism?
Sharmila Tagore married Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi on 27 December 1968. After converting to Islam, she changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana.
Also mentioned the old protest on Vande Mataram
Mukesh Khanna also talked about the objections raised historically regarding Vande Mataram. He claimed that the objection from some sections of the Muslim community was not only over the references to Hindu deities in the later parts of the song.
He said that one objection was also that Muslims bow only before God. Mukesh said, “The objection on this has not started from today. The argument that has been given is that they bow only before God and hence will not bow before anyone else.”
The actor also mentioned different singing versions of Vande Mataram. He gave the example of versions involving Lata Mangeshkar, Hemant Kumar and AR Rahman.
Example of AR Rahman’s ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’
Mukesh Khanna gave the example of AR Rahman’s song ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ to explain the expression of respect for the motherland.
He said, “He says ‘Maa tujhe salaam’. He is calling her mother and saluting her.”
The actor said that respecting national symbols should not mean forcing anyone to bow down. However, he raised questions regarding the objection on singing Vande Mataram.
He said, “We bow before Mother India. If someone does not want to bow then it is fine, we are not forcing him to bow. But then to say that Vande Mataram should not be sung, I do not understand this.”
Mukesh Khanna was last seen in the Gujarati film ‘Vishwarguru’ released in 2025. He played the role of Kashyap in the film.
What did Sharmila Tagore say?
Sharmila Tagore said in a conversation with news agency IANS, ‘Many religious people believe in only one God, not in many Gods. There is an antara in Vande Mataram, in which many deities are mentioned.
For those who believe in one religion, one God, it is difficult to say ‘Vande Kali, Vande Durga’. If we take along all the religious people of India, then the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram are very good. However, Sharmila Tagore has not yet reacted to Kangana’s comment.
After Sharmila Tagore’s comment on Vande Mataram, Kangana Ranaut had said that come out of Hindu-Muslim thinking.
