A very painful case related to superstition has come to light in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand. Two innocent brothers suffering from high fever died in Pargada village of Bhadani Nagar OP area, while the condition of their mother remains critical. Instead of getting the disease treated in the hospital, the family got the exorcism done by a Tantrik for three days. When both the children were taken to the hospital after their condition worsened, it was too late.
It is being told that three-four days ago, in the house of Shankar Bedia, resident of Pargada village, his 15-year-old son Ramkisun, 10-year-old Sahil and wife Sangeeta Devi suffered from high fever. Seeing all three ill together, the family members assumed it to be the effect of some upper wind. After this, instead of going to the doctor, a Tantrik was called to the house and exorcism was started.
Incense sticks were kept burning in the house and the Tantrik kept claiming to cure all three by reciting mantras. During this period, instead of improving, the health of Ramkisun, Sahil and their mother continued to deteriorate. Despite this, no effort was made by the family to take him to the hospital immediately. The treatment continued like this for three days and the condition of the children became very serious.
Both brothers fainted, died before reaching hospital
When the condition of both the brothers became uncontrollable and they became unconscious, the family members hurriedly helped them. Ramgarh Left with Sadar Hospital. But both the children died on the way. On reaching the hospital, doctors declared both of them dead. After this incident, there was chaos in the family and there is mourning in the entire village.
Here, the condition of the children’s mother Sangeeta Devi was also continuously deteriorating. When his heartbeat became weak, the doctors referred him to RIMS, Ranchi for better treatment in his critical condition. At present she is struggling between life and death in the hospital.
The most poignant aspect of the incident is that the head of the family, Shankar Bedia, does a private job in Odisha to earn his living. He was not present in the village at the time of the incident. The family had a dream to educate both their sons and make them great men, but now Ramkisun and Sahil are no more in this world.
Investigation of water contamination also
After getting information about the matter, Block Development Officer of Patratu block, Manoj Gupta reached the village. He met the victim’s family and consoled them. BDO has also talked about providing compensation to the family as per government rules.
In view of three members of the same family suffering from high fever simultaneously, investigation into possible health related reasons has also been started. The team of PHE department visited the village and took water samples from the hand pumps installed nearby. Through their investigation, efforts are being made to find out whether the water is contaminated and whether it plays any role in the spread of infection.
High fever can be a sign of many types of infections or diseases. Medical examination is necessary for possibilities like viral fever, malaria, typhoid or diseases caused by contaminated water. However, in this case the actual cause of death will be clear only after investigation and medical report.
Mourning in the village, questions raised on superstition
There is mourning in Pargada village after the death of both the children. There is discussion among the villagers that if the children had received medical help in time, perhaps the situation could have been different. At the same time, this incident also brings to light the lack of awareness about health services and disease along with superstition in rural areas.
