Pollution has suddenly increased after Diwali in the entire country including Haryana. Haryana has left even the capital Delhi behind in pollution. Jind’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 421, which falls in the severe category. Even a healthy person can breathe such air.

Out of the top 10 most polluted districts in the country, 8 are from Haryana. Pollution is highest in Jind, Dharuhera (Rewari), Narnaul, Rohtak, Gurugram, Bahadurgarh (Jhajjar), Charkhi Dadri and Sirsa. AQI has reached above 400 in Jind and Dharuhera. Bhiwadi of Rajasthan is at 7th place in terms of pollution and the capital Delhi is at 10th place. AQI had reached 500 in 15 districts of Haryana on Diwali night.
Dr. Kamal Kishore, physician at Geetanjali Hospital in Hisar, has advised everyone to wear N-95 or double surgical mask during outdoor activities for protection.
Second phase of GRP implemented On Sunday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had implemented Phase II of the Graded Responsible Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR. The step was taken on Saturday after a review by the sub-committee on GRAPE and the forecasts of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
If AQI is between 201 to 300, the air is considered bad. In this the first stage of GRAP is implemented. When the AQI is between 301 and 400, the air is considered “very poor” and the second stage of GRAP is applied. When the AQI is between 401 and 450, the air falls into the “severe” category and the third stage of GRAP applies.
If the AQI goes above 450, the air is considered “extremely severe” and stage four of GRAP applies. As pollution increases, traffic rules also become stricter.
