Sonia’s first post on X, Sonia met Rajiv in a restaurant, fell in love there

1. I liked Rajiv in the first meeting itself
Sonia told that when she met Rajiv Gandhi for the first time, she immediately felt that he was someone with whom she would like to live. Later he came to know that Rajiv also felt the same way. Their friendship grew from spending time together at parties, outings and student meetings.

2. First meeting with Indira and adjusting to the new family.
After marriage with Rajiv, Sonia made her place in the Nehru-Gandhi family. The autobiography mentions his first meeting with his mother-in-law and the then PM Indira Gandhi and his experiences of living with his family in India.
He wrote that adjusting to the local language, food and culture was also a part of life. The book also writes about learning Hindi, wearing saree and adopting Indian lifestyle.
3. Life changed after the assassination of Indira and Rajiv
Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. Seven years later, in 1991, Rajiv was also assassinated. Sonia told that the pain of losing her loved ones pushed her towards public life and politics. Earlier, she wanted to keep her personal life away from public view.
4. Stayed away from politics even after Rajiv’s assassination
Even after Rajiv’s assassination in 1991, Sonia remained away from politics. PV Narasimha Rao became the Prime Minister. By 1996, Congress started weakening and many factions were formed in the party.
In 1997, Sonia took primary membership of the party to unify the Congress. After 62 days in 1998, she became Congress President. Sonia remained president till 2017, the longest tenure in the party’s history.
5. Got a chance to become PM, but chose Manmohan Singh
In 2004, Congress formed UPA with 14 allies. After the elections, UPA got the support of 335 MPs with the support of many parties including the Left. Colleagues supported Sonia Gandhi to become Prime Minister, but she declined the post on 18 May 2004. After this Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister.
However, NDA raised the issue of Sonia being a foreign national and opposed her becoming PM. Due to this, Sonia rejected the post of PM and proposed to make Manmohan Singh the PM. Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister. However, it is said that behind the scenes, the reins of the government were in Sonia’s hands.
