The Supreme Court on Friday strongly criticized Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The court said how did he give permission to cut trees without thinking, that too when a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
The bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Ujjwal Bhuyan expressed deep displeasure over the LG’s action of felling trees without taking permission from the court. The court also condemned the attempts to hide the role of LG in the felling of trees.
This case is related to the illegal cutting of hundreds of trees by the DDA. The Aam Aadmi Party has alleged that 1,100 trees have been cut in the Southern Ridge area of Delhi on the instructions of the Lieutenant Governor. In the last hearing of this case, the Supreme Court had ordered that permission of the court must be taken before any such action.
The court said that the LG did not use his mind at all in this matter. He assumed that the Delhi government has the power of the tree officer. What is happening is sad. We should have been told earlier that the Lieutenant Governor had given instructions to cut the trees.
The bench also asked LG VK Saxena if he considered himself a court. Justice Oka said that I feel that the Lieutenant Governor thinks that he is a court. Did any DDA official go to LG and tell him that we need the order of the Supreme Court to proceed further in this matter?
The bench said that all the parties involved in this case made mistakes, including VK Saxena. Along with this, the bench also condemned all the parties for trying to cover up the mistakes instead of coming to the court to correct the mistake.
The Supreme Court also ordered the DDA to explain whether the decision to cut the trees was taken on the basis of LG’s permission or whether any independent decision was also taken. Apart from this, the court also sent a notice to the tree cutting contractor and asked on whose orders he cut the trees.
