The Supreme Court Collegium has sent the recommendation of five names to the Central Government for appointing judges in the Supreme Court. These include four Chief Justices of the High Court and a senior woman lawyer. The collegium has sent the names of Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Shri Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Arun Palli and senior advocate V Mohana. This recommendation has been made during the collegium meetings held on 22 and 27 May. At present there is only one woman judge in the Supreme Court. With the appointment of senior advocate V Mohana, it is expected that the participation of women in the Supreme Court will be strengthened. At present there is only one woman judge in the Supreme Court, Justice BV Nagarathna. No woman has been appointed to the Supreme Court since August 2021. Currently there are 32 judges in the Supreme Court. Two more posts will become vacant after the retirement of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Pankaj Mittal in June. The number of judges in the Supreme Court will increase to 37. On May 5, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37. The government will present a bill related to this in the next session of Parliament. The 1956 law will be amended after cabinet approval. Under Article 124(1) of the Constitution, Parliament has the right to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court. After the implementation of the law, the Supreme Court Collegium will send the names of new judges to the government. More than 92 thousand cases are pending in the Supreme Court. At present there are 92,385 pending cases in the Supreme Court. The number of cases has increased continuously due to increase in e-filing after Covid. The Central Government had told in the Rajya Sabha on 11 December 2025 that there are a total of more than 5.49 crore cases pending in the courts across the country.
