Diljit Dosanjh starrer ‘Sutlej’ is finally coming on ZEE5 after a wait of three and a half years. Its director Honey Trehan, in a special conversation, talked about the struggle till the release of the film and the journey of bringing the story of Jaswant Singh Khalda to the screen… Honey Trehan says that the biggest challenge of ‘Sutlej’ was not making the film, but taking it to the audience. There were no hindrances from shooting to post-production. Wherever the shooting took place in Punjab, the administration provided full cooperation, but after the completion of the film, the censor certificate for theatrical release was not received and the struggle started from here. The film waited for release for about three and a half years. Sent only one message, got reply in 45 seconds, Diljit agreed to do the film. Honey tells that ‘During Covid, I had just messaged that Diljit, are you in India or America? He had a flight to California that night, so I had no hope that we would meet. Within a few seconds the reply came that we will definitely meet if time permits. While going to the airport, Diljeet came straight to meet me. Diljit did not even once ask questions about remuneration or business model. He was only interested in why the story was being told and how honestly it would be brought on screen. This is the story of those who risked their lives for truth and justice. Honey says that the purpose of ‘Sutlej’ is not to support or oppose any political ideology. For me, this is the story of those people who risked their lives for truth and justice. I want the audience to watch the film with an open mind and through it think afresh about that era of Punjab, Jaswant Singh’s struggle and the importance of justice. The biggest success of a film is not the box office but also the questions raised in the minds of the audience. According to Honey, he did not face any opposition during the shooting in Punjab… ‘Sutlej’ is not just a crime drama, but is the story of the pain of Punjab, which remained buried in the layers of history and politics for a long time. Despite being such a sensitive story, there was no opposition faced during the shooting in Punjab. Work was carried out at police stations, government buildings and public places with all necessary permissions and the administration provided full cooperation. After watching the film, the people of Punjab also said that for the first time this period has been shown with sensitivity and not sensationalism. Who was Jaswant Singh Khalda?
