Assam’s well-known musician and singer Samar Hazarika passed away in Guwahati on Tuesday. He was ill for a long time. Family members have confirmed his death. His age was 75 years. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Samar Hazarika died at his home in Nijarapar area of Guwahati. In this area, all the members of the Hazarika family live in separate houses built on the hill. According to the information received, he was ill for some time and had recently returned home after being discharged from the hospital.
Samar was the youngest brother of the great singer and Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika. He was the youngest among ten siblings. He also sang and composed many songs for radio, albums and films. He played an important role in carrying forward the musical tradition of the family. The theme of humanity and brotherhood was clearly visible in his songs.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed grief over his demise. He posted on X and said that Samar Hazarika’s voice made every occasion special. He made a great contribution to the culture of Assam. He carried forward the legacy of Bhupen Hazarika and also contributed significantly to his birth centenary celebrations. The Chief Minister said that with his departure, Assam has lost another great voice. He expressed condolences to the family and loved ones.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed grief over the demise of Samar Hazarika. He said that his demise on the day of Uruka, i.e. Magh Bihu, is very sad. He touched people’s hearts with his voice. He said that his contribution to Assamese music will always be remembered.
