A Pakistani court has sentenced Baloch human rights activist Mehrang Baloch and his two associates to life imprisonment. Mehrang Baloch, 33, heads the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) and has been campaigning for a long time against cases of alleged enforced disappearances in Balochistan. He was arrested along with several other activists in March last year. After the decision, Pakistan Human Rights Commission has demanded its review. The Commission says that human rights advocates are being treated like extremists. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee has described the decision as against the Baloch community. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has also criticized the trial, calling it a travesty of justice. After the decision, the debate regarding human rights and freedom of expression has intensified in Pakistan.
