Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India in September this year. The Russian government said on Tuesday that Putin will participate in the BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
PM Modi had officially invited Putin to attend the summit during his visit to India in December 2025.
This will be Putin’s second visit to India within a year. PM Modi will also visit Russia this year.
Earlier, Putin had visited India in December 2025. During that time he participated in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit with PM Modi.
The 2025 visit was also considered special because it was Putin’s first visit to India after the start of the Ukraine war. Before this, he last came to New Delhi in 2021.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reached India on 4 December 2025. Meanwhile, after landing at Delhi Airport, he left for the PM’s residence in the same Toyota SUV from Palam Airport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India is presiding over the BRICS summit
This year India is presiding over BRICS. BRICS is a group of the world’s largest emerging economies, in which apart from India, Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, new members like Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, UAE and Indonesia have also joined. During India’s Chairmanship, several meetings, ministerial conferences and working group discussions are being organized in different cities of the country throughout the year.
India has focused its presidency on strengthening the voice of the ‘Global South’ i.e. developing countries, multipolar world order, economic cooperation, energy security, digital public infrastructure, anti-terrorism cooperation and strengthening the supply chain. India is trying to show that BRICS can become not just a political platform but also a big economic grouping linked to trade, investment, technology and development.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also visited India. He participated in the meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers. In this meeting, issues like tensions in West Asia, global security, reform of multilateral institutions, terrorism and economic cooperation were discussed. India also said during the meeting that the world is changing rapidly and in such a time, cooperation between the countries of the Global South has become more important.
India’s presidency is also considered important because at present the world is going through many major crises. Amid US-China competition, Russia-Ukraine war, conflict in West Asia and global economic uncertainty, BRICS is trying to present itself as an alternative platform to the influence of Western countries.
PM Modi will also visit Russia this year
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was visiting India, had said on May 15 that he was preparing for PM Modi’s visit to Russia. He told that Modi has confirmed his visit to Russia. He said that there is strong cooperation between the two countries in defence, energy, trade and many other areas and Russia wants this partnership to continue to strengthen further.
From his statement it is believed that Modi may visit Russia this year to participate in the India-Russia annual summit. However, the official date or program of the yatra has not been formally announced yet.
The India-Russia annual summit is mostly held in October, November or December. In the last several years, this has mostly happened in the last months of the year. Therefore, this time also it is believed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia and the summit may take place in the last months of the year.
India-Russia annual summit is usually held every year. It was started in the year 2000. Since then, the leaders of both the countries have been participating in this summit in India and Russia alternately almost every year.
In this conference, Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin talk face to face. Defense, energy, trade, nuclear cooperation, space, connectivity and global issues are discussed in it.

PM Modi had presented Bhagavad Gita to Russian President Putin who visited India in December last year.
